Default Waterpolo! (Sehsuan, this one's for you)

Played waterpolo for 6 years and now i'm playing it with Georgia tech
We went up to UNC Chapel Hill over the weekend for a tournament.

I took some pictures with 300D. It is indeed a difficult sport to shoot. To ball moves so fast that its hard to get both the player and ball in the pic during the faster action sequences.

Check out my pics

Hmmm.... shot with 300D... nice work! The first shot would have been really good if you hadn't focused just behind the player

Sehsuan, you polo player meh? I know a whole bunch of ex-nationals

I just saved at high quality. I use only a 128mb card so i can get 59 shots out of it. Raw would give me only 17 and the saving time is so slow that i can't take continuous shots

Water turned out nice a blue using AWB
The lighting was white light indoors

Used the 70-200 f/4L
Av mode, was able to get shutter speeds of 1/250-1/320
which i don't think is enough for the quicker action sequences.
ISO's already at 1600

Do you think the 135 f/2 prime would be a better lense in this situation?

if you're using 135 f/2, that's only like... what... 1.5 stops faster? at least you can drop the iso to 800, and get more life and less noise into the photo

Then the shutter speed would be even slower right?
for indoor sports the lower aperture, the more shutter speed i can get
noise is not that important
Iso1600 on the 300D is not that bad at all

Any links to 135 f/2 galleries, i've searched photosig and lots of places but yet to come across galleries that feature lots of its photos

Flinchy, 135mm is just that, 135mm. You can do the same with your zoom set to 135mm, why waste your time searching for photos taken by it?

sehsuan, the difference between f/2 to f/4 is two stops. A sufficent understanding of exposure theory would have told you that instantly.

Because its a prime 135 that can get an aperture of f/2?
Because its one of canon's sharpest lens?

I know what 135mm is

Its just that i haven't seen alot of sports photos taken with it at f/2, the background blur should be really nice
That's why i want to search for photos taken by it

Like the gymnastics pic shown in Sehsuan's link.
I wanna see more of that.

Flinchy: The 135mm f2 prime would give lovely bokeh vs the 70-200 f4 at 135mm. You'd gain on shutter speed or you can lower the ISO with the prime since it can go to f2. Being a prime you would get better contrast and sharpness too.

But, 70-200 gives you flexibility to go long or wide. I guess it depends on whether you are stationary or can move about. For water polo where the action can change from one corner to another, the 70-200mm would give you more flexibility to cover a wider area. And that would be my choice too. (Hey! 70-200mm f2.8 would be a good lens to have lying around $$)

My 2 cents....

Sehsuan: ah... covering more types of sports!
