Y I am using the Nikon system.

    1) Ergonomics
    2) No fanciful bullshit
    3) No white lens (IMO ugly)
    4) Dependable flash system
    5) Slow but steady system development
    6) Top end cameras designed by Giugaro
    7) Lotsa access to 2nd hand stuff
    8) Golden boxes!

Y I am abit pissed recenty
    1) D3x pricing sux

    Hope this helps.

If I'm not wrong, for Canon, only 5D MkII have video mode which cost much much more than the D90.

    Moderator,

Can this be made into sticky. Many users out there has this same question on Canon Vs Nikon. So instead of wasting disk space and time answering the same question, consider making it sticky.

    you got your answer already.
canon is the one for you.
if d80 is not easy for you, then d90 will most probably give you the same after taste.
the d80/d90 range is not entry lvl series, so don't expect it to be user friendly on the controls...

I asked myself the same question when i first wanted a dslr...

asked around and you will get very different answers from both side.

Bought Nikon in the end cos i always feel that Nikon sounds very "pro"

Before i bought the dslr, i was using canon ixus...

IMO, pns - Canon, dslr - Nikon.

Till date, i have never regretted coming over to the dark side :P

since you are in nikon forum, everybody said nikon ler

in my opinion , camera is not talking with result itself , but sometime we know that we said with comunity. if your friends have nikon, buy nikon lar, if your friends all canon buy canon. i think both of them have same reputation. if you dont have any friends with dslr camera, just go to the shop , grap and you know which one you think the best for you. all lens and system i think both canon n nikon yes have adv n dis, but not for result not to far(for same price of both of them).

ask somebody with nikon , they will say buy nikon
ask somebody with canon, they will say buy canon

I bought Nikon because my colleague told me:

    Compact camera - buy Canon
    DSLR - definitely Nikon...

Then later I found out he bought the canon 450d
Until today, i still do not understand.

Anyway, I am absolutely happy with Nikon.

Been tracing nikon equipment for a while and am aiming at a d90. This mid-range will allow me a lot of leeway in learning and the basic video functions is a requirement of mine. Also my friend who is a pro recommended nikon.

Reckon that my first dslr is impt as it will affect which lens i buy in future. Dun want to regret and trade in later.

What are some of the competitive canon cameras and any opinions? Cheers

Hmm, nice to know there are so many helpful Nikon owners out there...

IMHO, if you are new to DSLRs, you will probably not be able to appreciate the subtle (and maybe not so subtle) differences between the different brands. Most probably, any DSLR today probably exceeds the capability of anyone new to them... so why not buy the cheapest kit available, eg, D60 or 1000D kit (or better still, get a second hand one with warranty) and then most importantly, enjoy the learning process. As they say, the journey is more interesting than the destination. Whatever DSLR you choose today, I am very sure you will not be happy with it before long.

    My 2 cents.

Me uses Canon SLR last time ... when come to the DSLR era, decided to jump ship and never regretted since then. Now having 2 bodies D80 & D300 ... no issue with controls being unfriendly of sorts if u constantly play with it. If you're an AF shooter, then it's a diff story ... even Canon u'll find things diff.

With all the help u get from Bros here, now go to shop and try out both Canon & Nikon cams to see which sings to you better ... forget the D80 go try the D300

i bought my first DSLR D80 few weeks ago and my friend bought his Canon 40D (his second DSLR, first is 450D), one day we met and talk about the camera and something abt wedding photography, he asked me how many focus point the D80 has, I said 11, then he asked, how many of them are accurate, I asked him back, aren't all are accurate? then he answered, no some focus point are not. this is a common problems in DSLR... I suppose his 40D and previous 450D have that problem........ Later I went home and test my D80, and yay! all 11 focus points are working accurately. I am happy with my choice!

    Hi

Thanks for the wonderful replies so far.

Why I post my thread here is because I'm inclining more to Nikon. Just needed more "Supporting Pillars".

Seemed like there's only 1 problem with Canon. At the same price range ~$2K, canon offers superior shuttle speed at 1/8000 versus the D90 1/4000. However the D300 matches that but at a vastly different pricing from the D90.

Given that I also noted that in the sports photography scene, canon virtually monopolise the scene!! I heard stories from my friend of pro photographers splashing 20K to replace entire nikon kit with canon....

    Correct me if i'm wrong.

Be your own pillar. People might give you hints to think about but the decision is yours because it's your money that you will spend.

The shuttle speed varies from zero at ground level up to Mach25 and more in space. But maybe you refer to shutter speed?
Such shutter speeds are extreme and as long as you don't foresee yourself capturing high-speed images or sports I think that point can be neglected. And to achieve such shutter speeds when capturing sports you'll need lenses of the same price range...

Stories keep the world going. It's just one example of a person in a very specialized sector of photography. If you are not into sports then it's simply not applicable to you. Why do you worry then?
I will not give you any recommendation in terms of brands but rather recommend you to listen less to other people's story and go to the shops and try for yourself. The discussion here is endless and every new posting will come up with new aspects. Nice to read but again, the decision is yours.
