Default Macros with Raynox

Just got my Raynox macro conversion lens today. Went to try some macros for the first time at Botanic Gardens. I did not bring along the tripod, so had to boost the ISO to get steady shots handheld. Hence the grainy pics.

#1: Found a colony of red ants occupying a fig branch.

#2: A soldier snarling at the lens when it approached too near.

#3: A self-sacrificing ant holding 2 leaves together for his colony to cross.

#4: Leaf Crossing Operation

#5: A tiny butterfly.

The shots are out of focus. Not sure what lens you use, but at higher mag rates, the DOF is very shallow. So need to get the focus in the dof.

Using Olympus kit lens. Yes, I discover the very narrow DOF when I attempt more steady shots at home using 50-200mm lens.

At f11

At f2.8:

Still have to play around to handle it better.
Is it the same DOF for proper macro lens?

Try to take under good lighting environment and use a ext flash for fill-in. To use closeup filter, use smaller aperture like f8 and min. speed of (1/focal length) sec. When pressing half-shutter to focus the object, try to move your setup to re-focus the object.

Thanks for the tip. Yes, from my few first attempts at macro, I realise lighting is very important to push for smaller aperture. Still trying to get a handle on focus. It has been quite windy these past weeks and difficult to do nature macros.

That's much better than mine! How did you achieve a black background and top lighting?
