in case you didn't know, a DSLR system consists of a camera body and any 1 of a whole range of interchangeable lenses, as long as they fit onto the mount.
Besides that you've got the possibility for other accessories like battery grip, flash, tripod, etc. But let's not go into that. To take pictures, you need to mount a lens onto the camera body to complete the pairing.

So a DSLR can be sold as body only, or bundled with a kit lens. Usually the entry-level to intermediate DSLRS come bundled with a kit lens, as their target market is 1st-time DSLR owners who have don't have any other lenses previously. The more 'serious' DSLRs are mostly sold as body-only, since the ppl who buy them usually have an arsenal of high-end lenses already.

so when a camera is marked as body-only, that's what you get... BODY ONLY.
[errr.. ok I'm not correct here. hahahhaa. You get the battery + charger, etc. haha. Actually for body-only, you get everything EXCEPT the kit lens! ]

body means you only get the camera system without any lens,
you need to buy lens separately...
my preference combination will be the body + 18-200,
at the end of the day, it is your decision on what you need and what you can afford...
remember ECONOMY is bad... CNY is near... its good to have spare cash on hand

Or... for same price as a new 18-200, can get a new 18-105 (ie kit lens from buy/sell) and a 2nd hand 70-300mm. Or just get the D90 kit (with 18-105mm lens) and a 70-300. Really depends on your needs and interests.

Cheers

intend to get a combo of D90 Dual lens Kit 18-55mm VR + 55-200mm VR and i might getting an additional of 50mm prime lens f1.8 (portrait shot is a must for me ^^)

total shld cost around 1990. wonder is it a good buy? or kinda wise of money buying "useless" lens. Please advise...

If you don't know worth it to buy these lens, just go with the kit lens.. It will suffice till you know your shooting style..

the 50mmf/1.8 is cheap, but do you need it? The 55-200mm is ok, but do you want to bring out these 2 lenses?

hoping to fulfill role for sniper and portrait shot with the budget i having. shooting with 50mmf/1.8 is something that i wish to have bcoz of the clean shot.

convenience wise is another thing i wan to consider as well... 18-200mm i think its too ex for me.

What's a CLEAN Shot? Wish is not a need.. and with a kit lens you can shoot clean portraits too.. lenses don't make a shot, it's the person behind the camera..

I'd say just go with the kit and nothing else.. start from there slowly..

as a beginner i suggest u get D90+18-105VR bundle.
You play for at least 1 month before deciding on anything.
If u want i can lend u 50 f1.8 to play play for a week ($ deposit required; with full refund).
If u think u really need that 50 f1.8, i may consider selling to you or u buy a new one from shop.

Wah such a good deal from fellow CSer...! Mai Tu Liao!!
I agree with the advice.
The 18-105VR is more convenient than the 18-55/55-200 combo.
1) The 18-55 feels like a toy. The focusing ring turns when you focus, so using it with CPL filter is a bit annoying.
2) Often you wish for JUST that little bit more reach than 55mm. So you end up having to change lenses.

The 18-200 is even better, but then again the price is even better too
It's ultimately your decision... good luck!

wow you are so nice. ok mostly i will go for 18-105mm bundle first. but wats the aperture for it? 3.5-5.6G? (doesn't the quality counts when comes to aperture?)
another reason i am getting 50mm f1.8 is becoz friend recommend it that for start as well, its not that expensive
sorry for my noobness if there is any.

3.5-5.6 is quite standard because it is not a f2.8 lens.
Dont forget that it has VR so is still quite worth it (as compared to D80 kits lens).
As for quality, it is considered quite good. If you are talking abt bokeh (background blur) effect, of coz you cannot compare to f2.8.

As for 50 f1.8, it is really value for money. The only thing is that it is a prime lens, so you will miss out the convenience of a zoom lens.

Anyway, I am using the 18-200VRII ($1200). Very good for general purpose and walkaround lens. Of course it comes with a hefty price as well. But once you get this lens, you will feel reluctant to get f2.8, hence I advise you don't buy it too fast or out of impulse.

Shoot with the Kit lens first.. you got no budget then don't look there.. the nikkor 17-55 f2.8 can buy you another Kit, and the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 lens will require some knowledge beforehand when purchasing to get a sharp copy.

While good to have for low light indoor photography, I myself have found shooting at 2.8 not as ideal. hence I often mostly shoot at f/5.6..

For those who're still wondering whethere or not to get yourself a D90;

You don't need to think if you need to buy a D90 or not, you just go get it because it's worth it. Forget about how much you're spending, if it's worth giving you the shots you need (since you need it to get whatever type of photos you want) then it's gotta be worth all the chinks you spent. True?

Spoken in the form of a true D90 fan.
