Im currently using D300 and I just want to know about the set picture control options, there's 4 options, Standard, Neutral*, vivid* and Monochrome*. Im really curious whether I shud be using Standard, Neutral or Vivid. Which is the best options for a daily shooting and do other D300 user change those settings or its up to individual? I've been using Vivid and I find the colour are sharp and the saturation are high. So I just need some advise on when to use each options. Thankz.

If you are doing RAW, these controls doesn't mean alot, becuase you can also tweak it when you are doing RAW conversion. In fact these controls are just advisory, at the end of the day, which RAW converter you are using significantly affect the colours. If you are doing JPEG, then these controls are important, because they form the colours in the JPEG which still can be changed, but not as flexible as RAW. For events or portrait or general purpose, I tend to use Neutral, then tweak abit by up the sharpness only.

i use neutral and increase the sharpness by 2 pts
alternatively, if you check out the nikon site and do a search, you can actually download other picture controls eg. landscape, portrait etc.. these are sometimes useful esp for jpeg.. from there you can also customise the sharpness hope that helps |

I use D2X Mode III for normal / walkabout shoots. D2X Mode I for portrait shoots when I need nice skin tones. Vivid for shots where the increased saturation is an important element of the photographs' success.

The new Portrait and Landscape picture controls are supposed to supercede D2XModeI and D2XModeIII respectively but I still prefer the tonal gradations and colour of D2XModeI. unfortunately the D2XMode picture controls are not available for D90.

Hi TS,
An easy way to find out which Picture Control setting you like best is to: 1. Download and install CaptureNX2 trial. 2. Shoot in RAW and then change Picture Control setting in CaptureNX2, see for yourself which settings you like best and for what type of shoot. 3. Use these settings that you like in your future photo shoot. ![]() |

Anyway, I'm using Portrait on D90 and D2XModeI on D300 and I find them quite close. There are some subtle differences but close enough for me. |

I'm thinking theoratically, if we can see the emulated curve, then we sould be able to create a new curve that is the same, and then export to D90. Anyway... I don't own a D90... else I go try it out ![]() |
