Hey guys.
i have been shooting with 2 cameras my D70 and recently my D300 i was pleased withmy d70 just that the lcd was too damn small the d300 didn't give me the colours i liked no matter what settings i used and the noise level was surprisingly high to me. i recently sold my whole system really everything as i will be going over seas. i was thinking should i get a D40 a D90 or a LX3 these cams have their pros and cons i just want to hear peoples opinions right now i dun want to be changing lenses all the time so i will just be using the 18-55mm for both nikon DSLRS money is not really the problem but i i just don't want to spend too much and save more for living expenses. anyway i will be buying from aus LX3 is 650 D40 is 599 D90 is 1489 all in Aus dollars i changed the cash when its 1 to 1 all brand new with auzzie warranty. so please do give me your opinions thank you very much |

maybe you should get a D90 then, since you're already familiar with Nikon.
a non-DSLR's noise level is just incredible if you find even D300's noise level unacceptable. I'm very surprised about your disappointment with D300 though. |

d70 lcd was too small
d300 didn't give me the colours, noise level high i dun want to be changing lenses all the time so i will just be using the 18-55mm money is not really the problem just don't want to spend too much LX3, i will choose. more for the money and convinence factor. i don't think both d40 and d90 have more impressive noise performance than d300.

how can the noise control of D300 be bad?
Have you ever though of fine tune the setting on your D300 to you liking? do you get a used D300, which previous owner set it to his taste but it is not fine with you? if you think D300 is not good enough, than D700, D3 or D3X is the way to go. |

What settings did you use for the following
1) Colour mode 2) ISO setting 3) Auto ISO on? We need these settings to continue advising you. |

If you have not sell away your D300 I suggest you give this guy another try. I moved from D70 to D300 a month ago and found everything were so nice. The metering, auto WB, the new picture control, the LCD, the ISO...... The list goes on and on, everything was so much better than my old D70.

Get a D3!!! hahaha I have not used D70 b4, only D300 previously, but I find it hard to believe D300 can be worse than D70. ![]()

i agree...
somehow i feel that the D300 is raelly very good, but the guys who made the jump from the D70 all seem to have minor issues with it for some reason... like for me, when i zoom in to check sharpness, it always looks very.. -_-" anyway. we should set a forum for this. but anyway, back to the topic. if you didnt like the D300, none of these cameras will satisfy you. period. |

d70 better colours? i'd say it has a far gentler learning curve than the d300. need to shoot quite a bit with the d300 if u are not used to cameras of that level, before getting passable results under weird lighting conditions. when i upgraded from 40x to 300, i was stunned at why this "expensive" body can't get anything as decent as my d40x ![]() |

D90 should be you best choice. Cannot agee on the 18-55 lens though. Get a 16-85 VR or 18-200 VR.

If you have seen D70 noise, then why wouldn't the D300 noise level satisfied you?
![]() Anyway you can get a D3/D3x ![]() As you're going overseas, perhaps you want to go light. In that case, get a D40. LX3 is expensive and you can't change lens. Plus it doesn't really perform like a dslr. So drop it. If weight and size is no issue to you, then by all means, go for D90, and you get a longer kit lens.

The problem I think is that the d300 is just not worth the money to me I have tried many settings and just feel that it's noise Level is higher that's just how I feel. Looks like the best pick is either of. The nikons thanks guys. The d70i feel was perfect just that the screen was too small other than that it's fine the d300 on the other hand I felt gave me a bit less pleasure

Anyway, if you feel that the 6.1mp size is good enough, then stick with the D40. It's small and light and should give you the pics you want. |

Well, just get an LX3, portable and doesn't have to worry about getting dry cabinet etc etc since I think you're not putting photography high on your list now.

If you are comparing these two in term of price performance pointe of view! D300 still win by a long margine! There is no contest at all bro. D70 kit cost around 1.8k when it came out I guess and D300 is now easily available for aound 2k! The body to body comparison itself is a no contest, let alone the image quality ![]() Bottom line, what ever and how ever you compare the D70 with a D300 there is NO CONTEST ![]() |
