    Good question.

When I downloaded via USB cable connected directly to camera, I copied and pasted onto my desktop, all my RAW images become JPEG!

    WHY!!

you can connect your camera to the PC to download images, but it is slow and waste your camera battery power. Not recommended unless you have no other way.

best is just get a card reader.

When you connect via USB, does your camera shows up as a 'Camera' or 'Removable Disk' ? Could it be because your camera saves in both RAW and JPG?

i use the card reader method, but i do find the USB to camera method faster..

it downloads from my cam at over 30mb/s, but from the card reader, goes at 15-20mb/s..

to me time is not really the essence, its juz browsing another page of CS before the transfer's done.. but i stopped using the camera to PC using USB method, cos i am scared that the constant plugging in and out of the connector will spoil the connector on my cam.. haha.

Yes, well, the problem is it downloads duplicates. So, I take both Raw and JPEG, and it downloads both as JPEG's. Irritating!

Used to use card reader, but realised that USB to camera was faster than using card reader. So swapped to USB to camera method. Probably need a better card reader though.

I'd do it by card reader most of the time, especially if it's rushing in the middle of an event. That way, I can snap with another memory card while the other one is being emptied.

However, there are condition in which I plug the camera directly. This happens when I'm actually trying to discharge the battery totally before storing the gear.

Yes.. Actually I hate to plug in to my camera's usb port as well.. got this thinking that the rubber will become loose eventually.

How much is a Sandisk card reader? If I'm not wrong those brandless card readers only cost around S$4.00.

Card reader, as I usually end up with more then one card filled at the end of shooting.

Used to be via usb cable to camera, but did not want to be dependent camera's battery, so I got a card reader recently.

I use a sandisk high speed USB card reader. Previously I use one of those no-brand card reader but found the transfer speed was too slow. The high speed reader is noticeably faster.
