Default Seagull flying over Tokyo Bay

Always fascinated to see those pics of birds in flight in this forum... Amazed with the skills and precision of the photographer. Was at Tokyo Bay, the tour guide threw some bread crumps and a flock of seagulls came whopping by... Had my new 450D with me (first time on vacation with a DSLR), and tried my first attempt to shoot some birds in flight. Wow, those fellas are as fast as F16s and so agile... Took 20+ shots and only couple of shots came out fairly OK... Most of them ended up looking like some fur balls in the air... Hesitate quite awhile before decided to post. Anyway, never post, never learn Any comments to help me improve on how to shoot these birds in flight is much appreciated...

Exposure Program - Aperture Priority
Exposure - 1/3200
Aperture - f/4
Focal Length - 55mm
Metering - Evaluative
AF - AI Servo

I think it is abit soft, maybe it is my focusing is poor, DOF too shallow or just because my hand is not steady... I know the composition abit out, the tip of the wing get cropped off.. That's my limited skills which cannot catch up with the bird's speed.... And gosh they don't fly straight...
