Have anyone used a Portable Photo Viewer / HDD?
Can anyone recommend a good one? ie. the largest possible screen. |

lokey,
I have the P-5000. I use it regularly on vacations and also to just take some favourite photos with me all the time. I have not used any other units to compare with; basically screen is pretty good, battery life is good for at least a weeks use - i download only at the end of day, about 200MB to 500MB each time only. Tranfer rate is good enough for me. Interface and usage needs a little time to get used to - i don't know if the P-7000 has changed it, but selecting individual files for copy/move takes quite a few steps. there is no mass selection of individual photos available, say you wanted to delete anything taken after 8pm or realise that you have duplicates photos in another directory (happens if you forget to erase the card and continued to shoot on the same card, and downloaded the whole lot the day after). You could manipultate the files directly from your computer (Vista e.g.) as a USB device. it works but remember to clean out the recycle bin as the files do sit in there somehow. I upgraded the internal drive from 80GB to a 120GB PATA drive (can search for the hack on the web) and it works, only that the supplied software doesn't recognise the bigger drive after that, and music aren't so easy to copy over anymore. movies are still okay but i rarely use that feature. hope that helps |

I also have the older Epson P-5000 and it is a life-saver on trips as I only shoot RAW. With the P-5000, I am able to re-use the 4 CF cards I brought along for the trips. The large screen is brilliant and the viewer is very easy to use.
One of the inconvenience will be that the battery has no seperate charger and requires to be charged while within the unit. Additional original battery is also pretty expensive at about $100. The battery life is average, probably due to the longer transfer time required for the much larger RAW files. It is a little bulky but I leave it in hotel and only back up at the end of the day.
