Default pns better than A100

when i look at a100 resale value, i just cannot understand why my beloved and proud workhorse is worth less than a cheapo pns. i mean why are the solidly built a100 with dual kit lens being offered cheaper than a cybershot pns? weird market. seems like few associate discontinued product as more worthy than whats still available off the shelf.

That's becos most people don't know how to appreciate Sony DSLRs, all they know is the big boys out there so when our bros need to offload their body for upgrades, they will have to price them lower than it's worth. I have came across a post a few days back that someone deter a newbie from buying into the Sony system quoting that Sony has no resale value so not to go into Sony system.

a100 has been discontinued thats why, you see old cams like canon 350d they are also sold cheaply right now.

Its the fact of the market. Alpha rox though!

The A100 launch price was 2x of the A200 right? I'm not sure since I wasn't into all these DSLR thing back in 2006 (got the info from dpreview), but I think it's the reason why A100 price dropped too much now. You can't expect to resell your A100 for more than the A200 average reselling price right?

the comparison is not exactly abt the rapid depreciation but the comparison bet pns and A100. beside ease of carry, I cant really see any other reason why a buyer wld opt for a more expensive used cybershot pns than A100 which is a solid dslr. its pns vs dslr and pns wins by achieving a higher resale price!

A very good reason is they dun understand how to operate a DSLR, a PNS is very user friendly and its PNS as you said, you dun have to change shutter speed, aperture, and ISO settings if you dunno how :P

and you can forgo the effort of changing lens all the time and yet carry a bulky thing along with you.

So PNS has many advantages over a DSLR.

Well, you're not comparing properly... you're comparing a 2-year old DSLR with a brand new PnS camera that has been launched recently. If you compare the price of the A100 and a 2-year old PnS, then the price differential would be quite similar to when they were new... give you an example - the Casio Exilim EX-V7 was launched 2 years ago (almost Jan 07). It cost about $600 (street price) then, but when I bought it secondhand when it was a year old, I paid only $250... in fact, the resale value of PnS is so poor that most people rather not sell it off... I paid $450 for a Fujifilm S9600 which still had 3 months warranty (out of 12 months) and the owner paid almost $800 for it...

So the bottomline is this:
1) Consumer electronic goods have little or no resale value cos the next update is round the corner.
2) Only higher-end cameras like DSLRs retain some resale value.

as prices of dslr drops, sadly, the resale market gets lower and lower. the turnover rate of camera bodies every year is also to blame. its just too fast!!

it is not exactly correct to look at A200 store price when determining how much A100 is worth. A100 is succeeded by A700, not A200, or A300/350.

even if comparing used A100 to brand new top-range cybershot, the hardware and technology in the A100 will surely be worth more, true?

If you are comparing image quality... overall with the larger image sensor the A100 would win most PnS (cybershot).. but it is also more difficult to maintain than most PnS....

That is your opinion. To me (and many others I believe), A200/300/350 are the sucessors of A100. A700 is an another completely different class.

Also, comparing a DSLR to a compact is kinda awkward imho. Can you tuck your DSLR in your pocket (maybe you can with a E420 + pancake 25mm) or can your grandma operate a DSLR (maybe yours can)...

I think for operation-wise... with the AUTO mode currently in all new dslr... taking photo with it is a snap.... It is the size & weight that keep alot from getting a dslr...

Yeah, I think cannot compare a pns with A100, the main purpose of a pns is it's portability with most features..however, if the size doesn't matter..I think A100 is still much much better than pns..some more it's 10MP that can produce a better quality picture than pns with a better control....well...pics talk..cam doesn't..so just shoot more and enjoy.

my wife just bought a brand new pns which cost more than A100 at our sales thread. I guess there is real value in being small and cute, even when her picture quality is no where near the A100 with kit 1870.

Personally if you are taking day shots in low ISO... the IQ of a good PnS does not suffer when compared with a entry-level dslr with kit lens... It is the night shoots (w/high ISO) that is generally a headache to most...

Are you trying to sell your A100 and find that you can't fetch a good price??
Anyway, pns and DSLR are for different needs. No point complaining and comparing the current market for A100. If you look at new A200 selling less than $900, with a 20%-30% price cut on 2nd hand with valid warranty. What can you expect on a A100 with no warranty?

Technology for DSLR will only improve and price will be lower so that the company can get a bigger market share. So in the future we can look forward for cheaper DSLR, and 2nd hand A900 may cost less than a pns. But for now, I just enjoy my shooting.

not selling my A100. same reason for keeping my 3MP pns bought 6 years back. wanted to sell the 3MP few years back and it can only fetch <$100, I was pondering how could such a fine piece of instrument worth less than one tank of petrol!? this 3MP probably worth abt $5/- now, about one bowl of rice noodle. how can I exchange a perfectly working pns capable of sharp 8R prints for a bowl of noodle??

Since the 3MP is $5, I now passed it to my 5 year old boy as toy camera. damn worth it. $5 in exchange for a 'toy" that takes real pics of his transformers which I printed out for him to stick at his bedside.

So similarly, its likely I wun exchange my A100 for 3 tanks of petrol. more worthwhile to keep it as spare cam. no need to switch lens on the move, just take out the 2nd body and shoot.

Pardon my ranting abt the crazy 2nd hand market place.

Well... you pay a premium for being the 1st owner of a new product... Actually the resale value of camera is much better than other electronic item such as laptop which resale value is .....
