I'm very concerned that the Singapore Flyer will get a green light to operate without an additional backup measures.

I believe that it's better to inform our friends and families not to take the Singapore Flyer as safety is not the main priority if it is allowed to resume it's operation.

The Flyer's management says it will take a few days to rectify the problem and get the wheel moving again. However, to put in an additional back-up mechanism to keep the wheel moving when a similar incident occurs could take weeks, or even months.

It now remains to be seen if the authorities will allow the Flyer to resume operations without an additional back-up mechanism. The police say they are looking into the matter with the assistance of international experts.

Flyer GM quits By Tessa Wong

IN A shock move, Singapore Flyer general manager Steven Yeo - the public face of the attraction since the Dec 23 incident which left 173 people trapped on the giant observation wheel for six hours - has resigned.

He tendered his resignation on Monday, giving six months' notice.
But Flyer management told him to go immediately, and by yesterday afternoon, he had cleared out his desk.

Dudes remember when this guy was the secretary general for the FAS? His job was to promote football to the masses and make it profitable, but i guess he sorta sucked at it. So what did he do? Blame the people.

"These are fair-weather fans. If they are true fans, they will follow the team through thick and thin and pay to watch them.

"It's difficult for Singapore football to progress with these kinds of fans."

I'm guessing he would have pulled another WKS, except the ang-mohs at the top got him first.

the show must go on, the wheel must spin again soon.

The tenants are suffering big time now and the losses from zero revenue from the wheel is making the bosses mad.

now that there is a scape goat, with the new gm, they really need to put in heaps of efforts to gain back people's confidence.

Maybe they should start giving free rides to singaporeans to bring back the crowd. its only a lift after all.

I don't see it as embarassing, more as typical. Anyway, the really embarrassing things about Singapore cannot be discussed here without violating the forum's rules .

Revamp of Singapore Flyer's F&B outlets in the works
By Hoe Yeen Nie, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 21 January 2009 2323 hrs

SINGAPORE: A revamp of the Singapore Flyer's food and beverage outlets is being discussed, with plans to lower prices and inject more local flavour. This comes weeks after a new executive committee was brought in to oversee operations.

Some of the changes include bringing in a food court, developing the boardwalk and possibly relocating some existing tenants. There will also be new packages to attract more visitors.

Patsy Ong, managing director of Adval Brand Group & executive committee member of Singapore Flyer, said: "When we re-open, the kids will probably ride for free... we will be doing a lot of product bundling."

Besides Ms Ong, the other executive committee members are Chng Hee Kok, former Member of Parliament and former CEO of NTUC Club, and Shirley Leow, ex-GM of NTUC Club Investments.

The committee was announced early last month, just as news of the sudden resignation of the Flyer's general manager, Steven Yeo, broke out. But Mr Chng put this down to coincidence, saying plans had been in place since December 15.

He added that the move was to address a management gap in the company.

"The Singapore Flyer comprises foreign investors and the board does not meet as often as needed, especially when there are teething problems and issues. The local management, comprising mainly Singaporeans, would have to report to somebody to have decisions taken, to move things forward," said Mr Chng.

Speaking to the media for the first time on Wednesday, the committee also dismissed allegations about the company's financial state.

Mr Chng said: "As far as I'm concerned, there is sufficient equity being injected into the company. There are outstanding bank loans no doubt and if the Flyer resumes operations, there will be cash inflow."

The Adval Brand Group is the sole marketing and ticketing agent for the Singapore Flyer. Under its contract, it guarantees S$16 million worth of ticket receipts each year.

Adval is still compiling its sales for 2008, but said it has already exceeded its contractual obligation. Despite the incident and dim tourism prospects for this year, it said it is confident it will do just as well in 2009.

The Flyer shut down last month due to a technical glitch and expectations are high that it will re-open in time for the Lunar New Year celebrations.

Adval said tour agencies and corporate clients have not cancelled their Flyer bookings, although they are prepared to make alternative plans. It is expecting about 4,000 visitors from these group bookings over the festive period.

On top of that, about 1,500 people from a constituency club have bought tickets for January 24.

Adval said tickets cannot be refunded, but it will allow an extension of ticket validity.

Safety experts are in town to certify and assess the Flyer. Their report will be handed to the police soon to obtain permission to resume operations.
