    MAGPIES WOUNDED BY WIGAN DEFEAT

    Posted 27/12/08 10:42

Joe Kinnear faces the task of sending out a patched-up Newcastle side against Liverpool on Sunday.

His squad was cut to the bare bones after he lost four players in the 2-1 defeat against Wigan at the JJB stadium yesterday.

Jose Enrique damaged a calf in the warm-up, then his replacement, Mark Viduka, suffered a torn groin muscle in the second half.

Habib Beye was taken to hospital with a suspected fracture and Sebastien Bassong was sent off for a professional foul on Emile Heskey and serves an automatic suspension.

Yet if Kinnear was reeling from the festive injury jinx then he vented most of his anger, not for the first time, on the match officials.

Kinnear believed Newcastle should have taken at least a point from a match in which referee Mike Dean awarded a penalty to Wigan when Heskey was brought down and then booked Andrew Carroll for diving when the Newcastle boss was convinced his side should have had a spot-kick.

Kinnear said: "I can't find words to express his (Dean's) performance. If he gives a penalty for Heskey why couldn't he for Andy Carroll?

"Heskey has done well, thrown himself and lost his balance. But he's 6ft 3in for Christ's sake. The referees fall for it. At the other end, Andy Carroll's got hacked down from behind. It's a clear penalty.

"In the last 15 minutes I always thought we'd get something out of the game. But you have to rely on officials to do their job, what they are supposed to do."

Newcastle did receive a late spot-kick of their own, which Danny Guthrie converted, but the result was a deserved victory for Wigan manager Steve Bruce, who admits his biggest problem now is to keep his confident team together.

Heskey is a January transfer target for Liverpool while Antonio Valencia has been linked with Real Madrid and Wilson Palacios and Amr Zaki are also being tracked by the big clubs.

Bruce, whose side now take on neighbours Bolton at the Reebok Stadium tomorrow, said: "The vultures will be circling but we have done a good job turning the club around and the last thing we want is to dismantle it. But I have had no offers for any of our players."

The Wigan manager was more interested in singing the praises of his own midfield star, Ryan Taylor, whose free-kick opening goal was his fourth in recent times against Newcastle.

Bruce said: "His deliveries from set-pieces are as good as I've seen. (Newcastle goalkeeper) Shay Given must hate the sight of him. It is an unbelievable art he has got."

becos they banking on a DRAW 0-0 where the final result for them is a 0-0.

but mancircle won and thus it is 0-1.

their prediction is wrong. they can say that stoke din't score but i can oso say that they din't say their 0-0 scoreline is leaning more towards Stoke and i can even add on and say that they are rooting for manCircle.

but manCircle won 1-0 so, no go.

Let's get ready to GUESS GUESS GUESS!

    Correct Score Prediction = 3points!

    Correct 1st Scorer for LFC = 1point!

so in any game, the max point a participant can net is a total of 10points.

    Sorting Out the Grey Areas.

1). in the event of 1-0 end result, the 1st scorer will be taken as the last scorer even though the participant might haf anticipated 2-0 or 22-0 and haf listed someone else as the last scorer.

    LIVERPOOL NEWS

Torres confident Reds can progress against Madrid

    December 27, 2008

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres is confident his side will overcome Real Madrid in their Champions League last 16 clash.

Torres faced European heartbreak last season as Liverpool were knocked out in the semi-finals by Chelsea. The Reds are unbeaten in this year's competition but now face a tricky test against the reigning La Liga champions.

However, Torres believes his team will book their place in the quarter-finals.

"We all realise that it is going to be a tough tie against Real Madrid," he wrote on his personal website. "I don't like talking about a possible favourite, but I am sure that we are going to qualify for the next round."

However, the former Atletico Madrid player admitted he has not had much luck against the Spanish giants previously.

He said: "When I was playing my football in Spain, I used to score a lot against Barcelona, but found it harder when playing versus Real Madrid."

Torres also looked back on a fantastic first season for Liverpool and is hoping for more of the same in the new year.

It has been a mixed start to this campaign for the 24-year-old who has been blighted by injury.

However, Torres will have been buoyed to see his team sitting pretty at the top of the table and the Euro 2008 winner admits that the Premier League remains Liverpool's priority.

"I'm a bit sad to be coming to the end of this year," he wrote. "The first nine months were unbelievable and at the end, even though I could not play regularly because of injury, there was recognition in the form of awards and nominations, like the PFA's, L'Equipe and being a finalist in the FIFA World Player award.

"I have said before that this has been my best year as a professional footballer. I adapted to Liverpool far quicker than expected, and to end the 2007-08 season winning Euro 2008 was a perfect finish.

"I hope that at the end of 2009 we can say the same celebrating another title. I hope to avoid injuries and that we win the Premier League title; it is the dream of every 'Red' - fans, coaching staff and players.

"And it would be great to sign off the season lifting the Confederations Cup with Spain in South Africa."
