The vivitar 285HV and the metz 32 are good, costing ard $140 and $170 new respectively. Even better if you can get your hands on nikon sb-24, 25, 26 or 28 in the 2nd hand market. Prices should be ard $200 and above.

I got my Yashica CS-240 flash from Camera Workshop, not too powerful, but very functional with almost full head rotation, and 0° to 90° tilt. Less than $80. Since the 602 is non-TTL, this flash will do. I can't remember the exact figure but I believe that the guide number at ISO 160 is 40.

Think most of the Nikon flashes will work well with the 602z, the vivatar 285HV is cheap and good for it's price.

There *are* some users using the SB-80DX with 602z

I took a look at Vivitar 285HV last nite and it was very bulky. It is almost the size as 602Z, if not bigger. I checked with CP for Metz 32-Z1 but they told me no stock. Haizz ... Anyone knows where to get Metz? And how much is a new Nikon 24 in the market now?

there's no new Nikon SB24 any more (or SB25, SB26 for the matter).

I'm currently using the SB80DX, a powerful and rather compact flash but this is very expensive (~$500).

If you don't mind, you could consider a 2nd hand SB24,SB25 or SB26.

Can estimate the 2nd hand price of a SB24/25/26?

Heard that flash has a life span. If the previous seller used very frequently, then the flash will die soon if gotten a 2nd hand. True??

SB24/25 probably around $200+-. SB26 will cost more ~$300? SB26 is said to be better than the SB28 (better build and has wireless mode).

Some flash could last very long. The Sb24/25/26 are the top of the range during their time and very well built. But of course you should test out the flash to make sure they work fine.

Thanks for sharing your information!

I was offered $210 for SB25. If it's a good offer, then most probably i will get it. What do you think?

Nikon SB flashes are overkill.

Is that good or is it bad? Any justification?

It is good and more powerful than the usual auto flash out there (e.g. Vivitar 285HV and metz 32Z1). However, the TTL capability on the flash (a major component of the cost) will be wasted. Sizewise, they are pretty big as well compared to the camera.

1. turn off the camera and mount the flash (also turned off)
2. for the camera, use manual mode, set it to ISO 200, F4.0 for aperture, 1/250s for shutter speed and enable external flash in the menu.
3. set the flash to auto mode, and use ISO200, F4.0, and keep the zoom at the default.
4. shoot something nearby and you should see a properly exposed pic.

Just to add on.

They offer significantly more auto apertures and manual power settings compared to the Vivitar and Metz and this allows you greater flexibility in fine tuning the flash output. They are also better at controlling the flash output at macro distances. Recycle times on the nikon flashes are also significantly faster than the vivitar and you get a number more flashes per set of batteries.

So, in effect, you are still getting a superior autoflash even if you are not using its TTL capabilities.
