Guys, am thinking of getting a DSLR that has video capability. Should I go for Canon 5DM2 or Nikon D90? Right now, more partial to the Nikon for ease of video edit, but sian that it uses SD card. I hear the 5DMII video damn hard to edit because of its format. But the 5DM2 got better sensor than the D90 right? Basically, just wanna ask u guys which camera I should go to. Thanks.

if you have the budget for the 5D mkII, i would say go for that. apart from the HD video, the larger sensor can provide another dimension for your photography with shallower DOF compared to the APS-C D90.
out of curiosity, why not just get a HD video camera?

Definitely 5D mkII.
4/3s for telephoto/large DOF. 5D mkII for landscapes/shallow DOF. No point get another of similar sensor size. Video is still in "beta", so I would suggest wait till it's "stable" before jumping into video for DSLRs.

5D MkII has already gained the fame for being able to output images better than the larger 1Ds MkIII, so what you are investing into is a really good camera body. The D90 is far from its capability, only the D700 rivals the 5D MkII from what I have heard from users. So if you are comparing both, you might as well get the better (in reviews) 5D MkII. If money is not a problem to you, might as well ditch these "regular brands" and look up Red (company) coming offering, the "Scarlet" modular camera system. Inter-switchable between 35mm format to sizes that will blow your mind... Have fun...

The reason why I am considering the DSLR with movie is to enhance functionality. I like the idea of being able to take some videos in addition to taking photos. I think going to take about 95% photos and 5% video. So I think to carry a separate videocam does not make practical sense.

Anyway, go for 5DmkII.. better quality of photos compared to D90.. I'm sure they should also have some softwares that'll go along for u to edit ur video. |

Video recording on D-SLRs is a new feature which quite premature imo.
Since in the field we have only manual focus capability imo. I prefer the next generation of D-SLR which support AF capability during recording ! ![]() |

The question you should be asking is WHY do you want to spend the money on one of those cameras?
Well, video on dSLRs is new, but eventually third parties will come out with CODECs that let those files work with their video software. As someone who used to have video in their bridge camera, I may have used the video feature three times in three years (two of those times were in helicopters). Personally I have concerns about video on dSLRs (just as I do with live view on cameras on non-E-330 cameras)...my concern has to do with shutter life...when using video mode (as well as live view) the shutter "motor" is holding open the shutter shortening the life of the shutter...to me that's a big reason not to get one of these cameras (including the following live view cameras E-510, 520, 410, 420, 30, & 3 since none of them have a second sensor like the E-330 for live view). Personally I recently bought a new camcorder, and have no wishes to combine it with my SLR (unless maybe it uses the second sensor in an E-330 like camera). |

If you are looking at DSMC (Digital Still and Motion Camera), then Red company has sorted that out with the Epic Scarlet. If you are looking at a kick butt 135 format camera, then the Canon 5D MkII seems to be the way to go. Personally I would not use a Canon, but then again, I am being non-biased and based on the reviews that I am hearing so far. The internet has all praise for this Canon model (though there are also reports of a "black dots syndrome"). But why aren't you even considering the Nikon D700 which is a really good camera for 135 Full Frame.

Thanks for the inputs. Much appreciated. No lar, I am not looking to buy another DSLR or to jump ship. Neither am I a 135mm FF wannabe. Just thinking that if I get a DSLR with some video capabilities, it might be a good thing. Of course, if Oly were to make one like that in the near future, I will get that one. Am going to check out the Red Scarlet first.

Red scarlet is indeed an eye opener. Agree that it totally looks like a transformer. But this is really professional grade stuff and the price is out of my league totally!! LOL!!!

2009 and beyond will see more DSMCs being released by all camera manufacturers, with the announcement from Panasonic for their G1-HD. (Considering Panasonic has all the technology in place to make a convincing HD camera) so that is something to wait and see and I think that technology sharing between Olympus and Panasonic will yield something very outstanding for their new releases. So might as well wait and see should you be looking for a DSMC in the new year.
My only thought is that a good video camera traditionally works best on a 3CCD camera, so with one sensor on a SLR camera, I am wondering what kind of picture quality will it yield? That is the question in my head. Well, it is a wait and see thing.

I think you should really consider a separate equipment. Just get a video cam rather than having to rely on a single equipment which can fail, and you lose both function. Everytime I go for overseas trip where I know I can spend time taking photo I pack my video cam also.
If the dslr cannot work at least I have video. |

DSLR with video function should not be what you are looking for now.. It's still not mature enough yet. I think the D90 cannot AF while in video I heard?
Get a dedicated video camera if you need video.

I think the 5D MK II is better than the D90 when it comes to video. This video is amazing and shows what the 5D2 is capable of. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdaybWRRDWI
