I want to upgrade my 17-50 to a 24-70L because i wanted a further reach than the current 17-50. I want to know if this is a good option or i shld keep my tamron first till i can upgrade to a FF then get better lens.I read before 24-70 is a heavy lens and might be advisable to have a batt grip for better support. is that true?
i change also because i want to try out an L.if this is not a gd option, will it be better with a 1740L? Can someone with a crop body and uses this lens advise me? or anyone with these lens advise me? Thanks.

Keep the 17-50. It's a great lens for the price. 24 on a crop body will become 38mm which is not so wide unless you dun shoot landscape. Alternatively, you can get 10-22 to cover that focal length. 24-70 is also heavy compared to the tammy. Personally I feel that the 24-70 is more suitable for a FF camera. If you wanna try a L lens, can consider the 70-200 F4L. Cheap and can complement your exisiting focal length.

Its about 1kg so with a battery grib does help pivot better. Nevertheless, we have to get use to the weight since there is attention going FF. 70-200 also weights about same if I am right.

if you're going to "upgrade", you should go for an equivalent focal range, otherwise you lose the 17-24 part of your zoom. If you really want L, go for 17-40f4 or 16-35f2.8, otherwise consider the EFS 17-55 2.8 IS which is about the same as your tamron but with IS.
otherwise, if you're "expanding", the 24-70 is a good start, but it's a brick. Do you need the f2.8 aperture? There used to be many comparisons between 24-70 and 24-105, might be worth a search. Other than that, the next Ls are in the 70-200 range.

i think if you want to try out a L you should consider 24-105 f4L instead to complement your 17-50. unless you dont mind spending 1.9k on a 24-70 that weighs about 1kg, which i think will be too heavy for a walkaround lens.
for me i think that 17-50, 24-105 plus 70-200f4L will be an ideal combi even thou some of the focal length overlaps. if you have money and intend to upgrade to FF in near future, just go for 24-70 then 70-200f2.8L. haha, lens alone will set you back by near 2.8k le!

i shoot mostly indoors and some street shots.not much of a landscape person.f2.8 find it quite useful in some situation though.i know i will lose the 17-24 range. still thinking if shld get 2470 or 1740 or just hold off first till i'm more sure.an FF doesn't seem like it will come so soon

hold off.
the 17-50 (or 17-55) range is very useful for the crop bodies.

I got the 24-70 when I have the crop body but even since I have the FF body.... the 24-70 Lens is the best on the FF Body............. Shiok man... Have shot with this lens on the FF body and gives you the quality pictures on the 24-70 Lens....... |
