For me if the price for the SB-800 is $5xx, I might as well top up a bit more for the sb-900. Moreover, the price of SB-900 is now only slightly more than $600

how to know if one is grey set? does it come with warranty by Nikon? does the piece of paper inside the box count?

grey means shop warranty. ie - if something goes wrong within the warranty period, it is the shop that you got it from who will fix it. u bring it to nikon and they will charge you the full price to fix it regardless of warranty.
