Default What is the best way to clean desktop keyboard (between keys)

We all know what a pain it is to clean a desktop keyboard, esp. the areas between the keys after they have collected dust, dirt, etc.
I wonder what is the best way and tools to use to do this task and how you go about doing it.
Is there any device that has been invented to do this task efficently?

This is actually quite easy and fast.

    1) You need to suck, HARD! Use a powerful household vacuum to suck up what ever dirt and dust that resides underneath. Might as well suck around the behinds of the CPU at the same time.

    2) Take a piece of thin, stiff cardboard or plastic, and wrap a wet wipe once around it, and just give the rows a few sweeps. You will need a much shorter wedge to clean vertically.

    Done!

    Brush... (loosen grit)

Blower... (blow them to one corner)

Invert keyboard.... and let everything fall out...

last alternative... remove all the keys and clean them individually. hahah

For a membrane based keyboard: disassemble, wash with detergent, rinse, dry, re-assemble.

Not alternative for me . It is the norm. This is my only most effective way to do it. Dig all the keys out and clean each one individually and then clean the base and then put them all back in. With good brand keyboard like Microsoft or logitech for example, this is not a problem. Cheaper keyboard might suffer from broken bits when you take it out too many times or even the first ti,me. But if all you buy are cheap keyboards, I would just go buy a new one. If you bought a pricey model, investing some time to do this sort of cleaning is ideal. Do this every 6 months.

What can I use to clean the base? Use damp cloth ok? Detergent ok?
Understand that the base is quite sensitive so checking to make sure I don't spoil my keyboard.

Use a thin screwdriver. Aim between the keys and pry carefully. Use the other keys for leverage. Work down row by row.

Use digital camera to shoot pic of keyboard so you know where all the keys are. Then remove ALL the keys. The dirty look of what lies beneath will shock you. Clean up all. Put in the keys.

Membrane keyboards use a stack of plastic sheets with metal/carbon pads as electrodes. By pressing them together, the key contact closes. On top of the stack is a molded silicone rubber layer that provides spring action for the indiviual keys and seals the keyboard from dirt. On top of the silicone layer comes a casing which holds the inividual keys.

With this design, the electric/electronic parts are usually confined to a small circuit board and the metallized plastic sheets. Everything else can then be cleaned using water and detergent. Drying may take some time, especially for the keys as water gets trapped in lot of small gaps.

Most modern keyboards are built like this.

    Added later:

    1) Keyboard after opening the case.

    2) Two contact membranes, one separator layer

    3) Controller board

    4) Keys and silicone layer (individual silicone springs in this case). Also note the plastic tabs holding the key in place - if you want to remove the keys one by one, this would be the place to work on (rather than ripping the keys out from the top).
