Default Software Recommendations

Hi, I am looking for video editing software which can edit video files taken from 5D MK2. My understanding is that it uses the H264 codec. Is there any software which I can editing the H264 codec directly? Or I have to convert the files to editable format?

I would like to start off with an understandable video editing software with built in templates and special effects. Will Adobe premier element 4 be sufficient or is there other software worth recommend? Will move into Adobe Premier Pro CS4 or Sony Vegas once I have the confidence.

BTW, I am looking for window based software, my current system is Core i7.

Thanks in advance. Cheers!

try Sony Vegas. very easy to use.
CS4 not stable. Still have few major bugs to be fixed before you can use.

The Canon 5D Mk2 files are a real bugger to edit in native AVCHD, even with a fast PC. I would definitely recommend converting to intermediary codec like Cineform or Canopus HQ to give a better editing experience. Procoder 3 is not that cheap, but does the HQ conversion faster than realtime if you have a quad core processor.

From what I've gathered:

1. Editing in PC is SLOW on any software/hardware, because 5DII video uses QT codec which only runs with single core on PCs and does not support HW acceleration

2. There are reports that a mid-range intel Mac with Final Cut Express can handle 5DII video efficiently.

3. So, switch to a Mac if possible; else .....

cheers,

wallis

I would like to but MAC cost 3 times expensive than my current system. At least I can use the $$$ for a MAC to buy a 5D MK2, a new system, some new revision softwares and also hardwares.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I managed to buy a sony vegas from a gentlemen for video editing.

Thanks again.

Quote from one Vegas user experience (about editing 5D II video):

"Vegas will only preview these clips at 6FPS with no effects. imagine adding affects will slow it down to a crawl. To me, this is unacceptable. Imagine trying to make frame precise edits while matching video to music beats. It's quite difficult if you cant preview in at least 15fps."

and he was running from a Quad core PC with 4G RAM... not sure if he is using vegas 8 tho

Mac generally lasts you longer though, and the film industry is all changing to Mac now. Even broadcasting companies like CNN and Fox are all on Apple's Final Cut platform...

It's really worth the money eventually, when you're looking for quality vs time.

I agreed that MAC has better control in processing and memory arrangement. But cost wise a bit .....

I finished installing the software yesterday. Still have not tried do editing the video using the software. Most of the time, the slow in editing is due to the CPUs capability. Will try to edit some video to test my cuurent system's speed.
