I would like to have my Minolta 5D or 7D modified internally for IR photography.
Take out the internal IR filter, replace it with right sized IR Pass filter and focus calibration. Looking for experienced technician to take this up or pass me the contacts. Thanks. |

Interesting, as far as I know these bodies are IR ready and need no modification, just an IR filter and start shooting away.

I've also followed your other post, and I think you have a fundamental misconception. The Sony DSLRs, just like the Minoltas, DO SOUPPORT IR. However, the difference is that, if you modify the camera, it can take IR photos at "normal" shutter speeds. Unmodified cameras, including the Minoltas, would require a longer exposure time.

My preference is to make a permanent conversion on the 5D or 7D that can allow for hand held shooting of IR pictures. I've seen conversion services being offered on Nikon and Canon DSLRs, but haven't come across anybody offering to modify a Minolta body locally.

I'm not sure if anyone had successfully mod the 5D/7D but I remember reading that the IR filter thickness has to match the one in the cam in order to replace, if not there'll be problem such as oof photos.

These are what I have gathered from a friend who does IR on 5D.
5D is the better option for a mod becos even before a mod, it is relatively sensitive to IR. 7D may not be a good option... The issue with IR conversion for KM and Alpha dslrs is that the camera needs to be stripped open from the back (unlike many other dslrs which is stripped open from the front), and this is rather complicated. I found some people do it in the US, but it's quite pricey and with the additional shipment cost, it would be quite prohibitive. |
