Question A700 over-sensitive back scroll wheel

Hi,

Realised my A700 has an over-sensitive back scroll wheel. when i scroll it in any direction and stop, it will have the effect that I did scroll when the scroll wheel is stationary! also, sometimes, pressing on the housing surrounding the scroll wheel will have the effect as turning it...

is it my camera prob or a common issue? It doesn't really affect when taking photos, just a nuisance when reviewing photos....

Many thanks!

i had the same problem with my old A100. one scroll to change the aperture and the aperture value will go free wheeling to f22. sometimes it goes backwards as well.

anyway i tend to believe that all devices with this scroll mechanism will at one point or the other lose the sensitivity, esp if the user scrolls fast and impatiently..

but i guess its nothing Sony cant fix.

Yeap, it's a known issue... people do call it the russian roulette or something.

I've got mine sent in once - they changed the whole thing - and for a while, it's working fine, then it happened again.

What I generally think is that your thumbs may be moist when you operated the click wheels, so there maybe some tarnish inside the contacts.

One of the things I did was to turn the body unit off, and roll the wheel a couple of times to scrape the internal contacts clear, and the crazy wheel should go away at least for the day.

wow...thanks for the replies....

I thought i had butter thumbs or something.

Any idea how long it needs to stay in the service ctr to fix the problem?

What they did for mine is that they changed the whole wheel and the electronics that are linked to it...

It stayed inside SSC for about 5 working days - depending whether they have to order parts from JP.

What I suspect - is the contacts of the wheel that are coated quickly with a layer of tarnish or conductive particles or even moisture, and thus it shorted out internally - so the signal got garbled and the wheel went crazy.

well, what I say are just me deductions from my observations... I may be wrong... but rolling the wheel back and forth while the unit's switched off - does improve the situation in my case, so I'm not sending it into SSC - especially during this peak season.

Maybe you can try using your rocket blower on the wheel to try to blow out or dry the moisture?

Oh, for me I'm swamped with assignments and test shoots, like almost everyday is an appointment, a shoot assignment or a test shoot... those are things that I'm not really comfy to accomplish with my a100, maybe wait for the semester to start again, then I'd use my a100 and send my a700 into SSC.

LoL... nice to hear that bro... but I think don't count on that - because the problem usually would return - at least on my set after maybe 1 hour, sometimes 1/2 hour or it may work fine the whole day without needing me to grind the rear dial.

This is risky stuff - especially if you are shooting something that's important, on a mode that can be drastically affected by a malfunctioning rear dial... e.g. like if you are shooting a couple exchanging rings... then a light touch on the rear dial suddenly sends your f2.8 to F22... sure die sia...

So if you have a block of maybe a week without shooting, I suggest that you send it into SSC... (for me... that'd be in jan)

wooo...finally sent it in. Got it back in 5 days including sat and sun.

the report stated they replaced the mechanism.. tested it was ok at the SSC. will be monitoring the situation as warranty ends in feb...

Thanks for all the advice and workaround solutions!

You're welcome bro, good to hear that from you.

I'm currently not sending my set in... I think it can still last even with the crazy knob. :P
