Default Bag advice needed

Am considering getting a backpack for vacation purposes and wondering whether the following bags would be able to fit a Canon 400D with Tamron 17-50 lens attached and a 70-200 f4 lens?

- Lowepro Orion Trekker II
- Tamrac Adventure 7 or Adventure 9
- Kata DR 466 or DR 467

Thanks!

Default Re: Bag advice needed

Having come back from a trip myself, I've learnt a few things about carrying gear while sightseeing. A few things you might want to consider:

1. Ease of accessibility - During the trip how much swapping do you think you'll be doing? If there's going to be quite a bit there's nothing more annoying then having to put down the backpack, struggle to open it, swap lenses or other gear, close it, then swing it up and take a photo. Add another factor of annoyance if you're with a group and the only photographer.
2. Comfort - Many backpacks have what I consider inadequete straps. Given your gear it may or may not be an issue. It'll depend if you are going to add anything else other than your photography gear.
3. Secureness - If you're going somewhere with a more dubious crime rate, factor that into your consideration as well.
4. Bulk - Bulky bags are good for protection, but man it's hard to move in a crowded street.
5. Other things - What else are you intending to carry? As usual more stuff means a bigger bag.

On the bags you've listed, I believe all the last 2 should be able to carry your combination of gera. I however wasn't impressed with the paper-thin straps on the Kata. I was looking at them as an alternative in case my humongous Lowepro Rover Plus AW wasn't allowed for carry-on (it was, but I'm going to re-consider carrying a bag of that size in future trips, despite its awesome harness and support). The Kata had some nice things going for it, but those straps and lack of a proper lumbar support meant it was a no go.

I had the Orion Trekker II, but I think the 70-200/4 might be a tight fight; the bottom half isn't very tall. Have you considered the Orion Trekker AW? It has two halves that can detach, and you can just carry the bottom half as a beltback when you don't need to lug around more stuff.
