hi all,
i'm buying my first DSLR. I'm like to take landscape photos and children photos. Which is good for me? D40 or D60 or D80? Thanks in advance. |

Hi,
A D80 of course! why? 1.) D80 has the screw drive for older AF-D lenses, while D40/60 does not. 2.) D80 has a good built, decent color and controls. 3.) D80 has a vertical battery grip, D40/60 does not, only third party ones. 4.) The kit lens was a decent 18-135, compared to the 18-55s in the D40/60, but lack the VR in kit lens of the D60. However, on a side note, why not buy the D90? |

One more vote for the D80...save you the frustration later when you wana buy non AFS lens.

initially i am considering the D80 but the more i read in this forum, the more my heart sway towards the D90. Anyway price different vary not that much. So why not go for D90 instead? just like you i am a first timer to DSLR and still searching for a better deal

I concur with Daedalus Trent & nic67 -- a D90!
Forget about all the talk of buying one generation lower... depreciation... etc. D90 it is. And yes again, D80, at the very least. |

Haha, between the D40 and D60 then go for D60.
Got electronic rangefinder to make focusing easier. ![]()

There are lots of threads similar to this. Why not do a search?
Taking photos of the landscapes or children, mainly depends on the lens you use, rather than the camera body. D80 is somewhat out of the league of D40 and D60, but I'd vote for D80. If you can pay a bit more, get the D90. D80 will give you lots of advantages over the D40 and D60, like a longer battery life, autofocus with non AF-S lenses, top info lcd etc..

Hi,
I am tagging on to this thread. I am very very new to DSLR & am considering D60 because of it's light weight. Generally taking pictures of children only. Between D40 & D60, I should get D60 right? Or am I wrong? |

If you are think of getting used cam from the B&S, there are also the D70, D50 that you may want to consider.
Both of these bodies will allow you to use the AFD lens (just like the D80). All these model are selling at below $500. You can then get a 50mm f1.8 ($140 used) and a 18-55mm ($90 used) great for taking kids photo. You would want a flash like sb-600 ($280 new). That would be a very good set up for you to start. And you will still have spare to buy other accessories like dry cell etc. |
