Default Live view in D90

Is the live view feature in D90 available when using the scenes mode? Or is it only available in the Manual mode?

Last time I tried D90 at Nikon service centre, found that forcusing in LiveView mode is quite slow.

yea

and for 3rd party lenses (i.e- the popular Tamron 17-50 f2.8), major focusing problems where the focus osillates and refuses to lock

Doesn't concern me though, since i rarely use LV and if i need to, i'll just MF

You have focusing problems when using LV with the Tamron lens; got problem with Tamron lens + D90 + flash just like the problem with the D80?

D80 + Tamron 17-50 + flash = over exposure

Edit : When BL flash mode is used, the resulting image will over-expose.

Because it's using contrast detection instead of phase detection. Plus you get face detection. One plus point of AF using contrast detection is that it's dead accurate. If you shoot macro you will realise its benefits.

When auto-focusing with Live View in d90, is there a button (AE/AF in canon 450d) which I need to press

or i can just use the half-press the shutter release button?

Half-press shutter button.

My trick is this: use VF to grab focus, flick the focus switch to M before jumping into Live View.

hmm...my D90 always overexposures

Set to -0.6 exposure bias almost all the time!

That's normal. Because the bright background fools your camera.

Is it because of Active D-Lighting? My recent outdoor night shoot at a concert were shot at -1 EV also so that it wouldn't appear so bright. I wanted to retain the dim lighting atmosphere, heh. I think even ADL at Auto is doing too fine a job at increasing the perceived dynamic range...

From my experience, I got no problem handling my D90. After attending the workshop conducted by Steven on the settings, I tend to agree with him that D90 is equalvilent or some say much better than D300..... thats my opinion. I guess its the setting of the photos that was not done right. D90 will give u, u get wat u see....its FANTASTIC!

D90 better or D300 better, well it depends on the user. Casual users will find D90 better while D300 is equally good if the fleshy bit behind the camera is good too. D300 is about control while D90 is about simplicity. If you find that the shots come out off, blame yourself, and not the equipment. No piece of technology will cover all aspects. Shoot more, learn more, know more.

I felt the same when I got the D300... until I was testing some lenses and was trying out to see if the contrast detection could give me a better focus and it did!! now I use LV for slow tripod based work because the AF is more accurate.
On the D90, you'll need to get into LV to shoot video anyway.
