hi, im thinking of selling my 24-70 f2.8 for 24mm f2.8 and 85mm f1.4. Reasons being since i use this lens for wide angle (most of the time at 24mm)shots and occasional portraiture, i feel like getting dedicated prime for them.
24mm is so much lighter and compact than 24-70 and 84mm f1.4 can give a nicer bokeh than 24-70 Best part is both of these lenses optics are as sharp as 24-70 if not sharper. I know i will lose the convenience of the zoom function, but i think it is still a good trade off. what do you guys think? thanks. |

?? r u using full frame?
I have the 24mm f2.8 and the corner performance with FX is not good. But for DX I think it is pretty ok. I am thinking of selling my 24mm f2.8 due to the poor corner performance on my D700. Rumors that Nikon will be updating their WA primes. I am waiting for the replacement.... I was thinking of getting the 24-70mm too. But in the end I went the the 24mm f2.8 and 105mm f2.8. I got the 105mm instead for the VR and macro capability and slightly cheaper than the 85mm. for f1.4, I am waiting for the new 50mm f1.4 cheaper and wider. Everything else is acceptable to me. If u are using DX then it should be pretty good as other than the corners the lens is pretty sharp right from f2.8.
the travel pics are not taken with nikon DSLR. Only the baby pics are taken with the D700 105mm... I don't seem to have posted any pic with the 24mm.... Last edited by pisduck; 27th November 2008 at 07:15 PM. |

the samples of the 24mm can be found here
http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showt...highlight=24mm If I sell, I would wait for the new updated nikon WA prime. so I probably will not sell it anytime soon. I never used the 24-70mm so dunno. Anyway the 24-70mm is way too expensive for me to buy in additional to the primes. It is either I get primes or the 24-70mm... not both. |

Almost all my pics taken during my recent Jiuzhaigou trip was taken with this lens. This is a very sharp lens indeed. I went to Jiuzhaigou 3 years ago and shot the same scenes with another camera and zoom lens (which is also a reputedly sharp lens) and when I compared the pics, it's like heaven and earth kind of difference.
So if you are planning to use your camera during trips for landscape photography and don't have the luxury of time to change lenses at your convenience, this is the perfect lens to use despite its bulk and weight.

Most people in the other forum said that the AIS is a better performer than the AFD not just on the built quality and also image as well. I have the 24mm f2.8 AIS which perhaps u would like to compare against the 24-70 f2.8. I am curious to know how much better is the 24-70 compare to the AIS to justify the extra weight on the baggage.

I've been using 24-70, its definitely an excellent lens for travels that covers a decent wide angle of 24mm to mid-zoom range of 70mm.
Anyone knows if Nikon is intending to launch a new 14mm super wide angle Prime lens? I've been searching for a 2nd hand 14mm for super wide shots but no luck at all...not even the 17-35mm...lets hope they come out with a new lens like 16-35mm and still able to take in a filter. |

Get the 14-24mm loh.
It is 'significantly sharper than any fixed or zoom ultrawide from Canon or Nikon' according to Ken Rockwell ![]() http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/14-24mm.htm I have used a 14-24mm for travel photography. It doesn't really need a filter most of the time. ![]()

I agree about the older manual lenses: I have a 28 f2.8 AIS and it easily beats my 24-70 for sharpness and everything else at 28mm, as does my 35 1.4 AIS at 35mm. Don't think anything below 28mm for the older Nikon manual lenses is advisable though, haven't seen anything comparable to the 24-70 at that focal length.
If you can stand manual focusing, and can afford it, try the Zeiss ZF 25mm Distagon. It's excellent all around, especially stopped down just a little. And it has a very short focusing distance too, so you can do wide angle portraits so to speak. Or you can wait for the new Zeiss ZF 21 heh heh: if its performance is anything like the old Contax design from which it is taken, it is going to be outstanding. Hope this helps some. |

Well, a CPL would definitely help here - assuming you want to reduce the reflection and get a clearer view of the tree trunk in the water.

I had also shot with a 24-70mm which had been fitted with a CPL at the same position and the result was about the same as the 14-24mm without the CPL. Also, in some situations, for example in this instance at Jiuzhaigou, we might actually want to capture the reflection of the mountains and forests in the still waters of the lakes as well. So the difficulty would be more of achieving a balance of getting both the reflection and the clear view of the submerged tree trunks in the same image.

Yes, it's 15mm. Was actually aiming to shoot at 14mm but must have accidentally shifted the focal range slightly.
