Hi all,
Just like to find out.. When will be the correct time to face-out a camera. say like D70, D40 etc. and seem like more and more new cameras are coming out in market. will u buy a new camera like D300/D700 and find it being a old skool tool after just 1 year. Technology vs usage... hmmm.. is there a graph to it? when is the right time to upgrade (without money as a factor) ![]() |

The speed at which new cameras are being launched is purely to do with brand competition. C launches a new model, which forces N to quickly launch one in reply, and then followed by S/O/P, and so the cycle continues. It's good for the camera whores I guess. Seriously, there's no need to keep getting the latest model, unless you really find that your present camera cannot meet your requirements somehow. To keep chasing technology will just leave you with burns to your wallet. There is no BEST time to buy photographic equipment, really. Buy it to fill a need at a specific point in time. If you need a flash for an event, get it. Don't buy it because it's the latest on the market, then leave it in your cupboard.

With the advancement of technology, buying a camera is similar to buying a new computer, they get outdated pretty quick.
Perhaps you can plot a timeline of the release of the first DSLR (D1) till now, and observe the time between the release of replacement models. |

Evolution of technology... Nothing can change that...
It's a simple matter of having what you want, or wanting what you have. |

In all likelihood, if I were to keep my D80 in a dry cabinet, unused, for 4 or 5 years, it wouldn't start up. But I'm not going to waste my camera like that. Keep only if you don't need the $ and have some sentimental attachment to the camera. Who knows? Maybe the D3 will cost many thousands of dollars in 20 years, as Nikon's very first FX-format camera ![]()
