I've read a lot of good reviews for this and was considering getting it.
I borrowed my friends 18-200 and although its covenient the lens creep is a pain in the A. I dont really use the zoom that much since i like to get up close to my subjects and i prefer landscape shots, portrait and micro shots. I use the 50mm F1.8 and love the bokeh on that lens. I plan to upgrade to a full frame sensor in 2010 and thought this would be a good investment. Does the 17-55mm give you good bokeh on close up shots? |

the 17-55 is a dx lens, so as a future investment for FF,
then no is a bad investment. bokeh once, yes it's good. just wide enough for landscapes. best in the dx ranges. u might be better off with the 17-35 or 24-70 |

Both the 17-35mm and 24-70 lenses are also FX format and are abt $200-$300 more expensive than the 17-55mm.
How will they appear on a DX camera? Which one is better for bokeh and portrait? |

How will they appear on a DX.. Focal length for focal length, they should look the same. So a 24-70 will be a bit too long as a general purpose zoom on a DX. |

17-35 s**ks for that when you know how to get good bokeh from focal length, distance to subject and background any lens is fine. But i still like my 17-35. ![]() |

Get the 17-55mm, it is a wonderful lens and produces quite good bokeh.
Personally, if it is the lens that fits your current need, then there is little point not getting it just in anticipation of the FX camera that will come in a year or two time. Since you have the D300, just enjoy it and use it to the max. ![]() |

To find out how the bokeh changes with apperture, you can try to play with the depth of field tool on Tamron website.
Here is the link: http://www.tamron.com/lenses/learnin...comparison.php Cheers |

for less than 1/3rd the price, u can get a tamron 17-50mm f2.8. u lose 5mm at the long end (insignificant), and u get supposedly less accurate colours. also, images might be softer than the nikon but it's the way to go if u plan to upgrade.
of course, if u assume that the 17-55 nikon will depreciate less and u have the cash to get it, why not? ![]() |

I'm selling my 17-55 very soon, great (AWESOME) lens but just bought the 14-24 and 24-70 lenses at Cathay Photo. I do photo work so this glass will pay for it self.
Good combo for you could be the 12-24 DX and 24-70 - WHEN you go FX sell the 12-24 and get a 20 f2.8 with some cash spare...... |

your dream 17-55mm f2.8 is a very good lens four d300 although i don't have d300, i believe in thiese: dx lens for dx cams fx lens for fx cams yes, you plan to get your big sensor in 2010; then when 2010 come, just buy your dream cam + dream fx lens just like some say; between the 2, invests lens first; they hold their invest have friends who hold like **** for these years and when d3 came, their lens mainly suffered so... yes; u can buy 14-24mmm n 24-70mm now for 2010... i say good planning to but unless u buy either d3ord700; else if u itchy backside n buy d9 in 2010, your 14-24mm n 24-70mm (so call good invest now) MAY NOT BE CAPABLE in the new high MP d9; so... always believe in buy the best FOR NOW, not for future... so the best dx cam now is d300 for speed and d90 for almost everything else + maybe your dream 17-55mm f28 ... pardon my gammer, but if u really want to go fx now; go full fx = body + lens Last edited by mcn; 27th November 2008 at 08:22 PM. |
