I really want to buy a wide angle for the D300 however im totally confused asto what to buy. I will probably upgrade to full frame within the next 2 years so would prefer to invest in a lens that will last. I also want a lens with a good build quality.
1) AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED Isn't compatable with FX format. 2)AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED Expensive and heavy but supposed to be great lens and can be used on FX camera body. What is the disadvantage of using this on a DX camera? 3) Tokina 12-24. Half the price of the Nikon so wouldn't be such a pain to upgrade to another wide angle lens when i eventually buy a full frame camera. 4)Sigma 10-20. Again much cheaper but looks cheap and plasticky. Appreciate any feedback from people who have used the above lenses. |

thanks for asking that question. I am also thinking abt this since i intend to upgrade my D300 body soon.
I am using sigma 10-20. Great lens, loved it to bits. But it means that i need to change all of my other lenses to FF soon. Anyone has a good lens list? |

plus one from another user. usable from 15.5mm on FX, with one normal B+W filter screwed on.
14-24 is rather heavy an investment, and kinda spurs the TS to upgrade. if that's what TS really wants or needs, then good choice. otherwise, for maybe 1/3 the price (not sure, definitely less than half), the tokina is a good stop gap measure. tokina is better for DX, cos it's 3mm wider, and that's significant when talking abt UWAs. if pretty sure gonna upgrade, 14-24 is excellent. but cannot attach filter and it's frigging HEAVY piece of glass. all that, for 1.5mm wider on FX (which is significant enuff la) anyway, here's my sample pic of the 11-16 on a film camera. shot at 15mm and filter on, i think, so got slight vignetting http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pi...6&id=528582969 straight from film scan and no PP other than removing the number plate Last edited by boyboy; 26th November 2008 at 06:28 PM. if u wanna stick by nikon, get 12-24 first, lighter thus more portable, IQ not too bad.
wait till u upgrade to FF or FX 2 years later then get the 14-24. might be cheaper then?? maybe new lens by then as well?? my 2 cents for your consideration... |

Thanks for the advice.
What about investing in the Nikkor F2.8 17-55mm? |

Sigma 12-24. Full frame.
Crazy perspective on FX cams. Its a compromise on the D300 as you can use a Sigma 10-20....but if you are aiming for the future. Friggin soft though, unless stopped down to f8-11. But who cares when you can handhold at 1/2s and do ISO3200. You won't care about sharpness with 122 deg fov. Owned it before to do weddings but sold it coz it will never survive wide open. Got a couple of complaints about side softness even at 5.6. Cannot imagine how it will turn out in say St Theresa's/Andrews/Mary's/Chijmes.....yummy. If you are certain that you'd be going into the FX format, then the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED. The disadvantage? You can't go wider than 14mm... In contrast, lens such as the Sigma 10-20mm and the Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED for a fraction of the price of the 14-24mm.

If you are on DX, get the Tokina 11-16. It gives you very good IQ from centre to corner. Had it while using D300. 14-24 on DX is not wide at all. It gives you the widest FOV equiv to 21 on 35mm, yet 11mm on Tokina gives you 16.5 on 35mm. Only use 14-24 on a FX, use it on a DX, you are wasting $ for it does not perform like WAL at all.

I have the same dilemma like you a couple of weeks back. Was looking for a UWA lens that is format upgrade proof. Was considering Nikon 14-24 vs Sigma 12-24.
Here's my evaluation : Nikon 14-24 - beautiful lens, always sharp, flat 2.8, robust build - drawbacks (to me) are front element is huge and very protuding, heavy (1000g), longer (140mm) - also found it to be expensive and risky (of damage) when bring overseas (i can be quite clumsy) - cleaning front element could be a daunting task. Sigma 12-24 - 2mm wider, could be soft, variable F,robust build (except for the barrel paint could peel) - cheaper and easier to handle (for overseas use) as it is 110mm long and only 600g. Thus, I got the Sigma 12-24. Quite happy with it compared to the price I have paid. Decided Sigma 12-14 will be my travelling lens (when I travel light) and will eventually get Nikon 14-24 for its legendary performance. So, you need to think through some of these factors for yourself before deciding.

I have the sigma 10-20.
Cheap and plasticky doesn't equates to quality of lens is inferior. Image quality of Sigma VS the Nikon Pro lens 14-24mm? I guess you won't be able to tell the difference even if you print up to 8R. Pixel peeped and you will see the difference. But photography is more than being a peeping Tom, you see ![]() I would suggest get the lens that is within your budget and such that you wouldn't go hungry for the next 2 years before you go FF. 2 years is a long time, man.... who knows Nikon will release another FF 10mm f/1.4 lens...we don't know... Focus on how to see through the eye of the ultraiwide angle lens rather than stress over...what to buy...
