A good friend just got a 50D body without any lense and thinking to buy a set of L series lenses.
Any good combination of sets to buy. Would appreciate your opinion. I am a newbie so dunno how to advise him. Thanks |

Having L lenses is a luxury. Not that other non-L lenses are bad.

it depends on what is he going to shoot.
L lens or not, he himself will have to determine what kind of photos he is shooting, therefore he then can decide on the focal length. We cant give any recommendation w/o this info |

If its general walkabout then maybe the EF-s 17-55 is a good buy. not an L lens but image quality is just as good or beats some of the Ls.... if he is into wide angle then maybe also get the ef-s 10-22 mm... another wonderful lens. but bear in mind these 2 lenses cannot be used if he wants to go Full frame

If according to TS's request . I would suggest 17-40L and 70-200 IS F4 L .
But i dont recommend him spending if he dont really know what he really wants though. Maybe his really that rich ![]()

If he doesn't know what to buy, he most probably don't have much experiences taking photos yet. Suggest he get an 18-55 lens to get a feel first before thinking about buying anything else.

getting a L and not knowing how to use it to its full potential is a waste of money.

Hi thanks for all the comments and sorry to reply so long.
Actually this friend can afford and want to buy something of good quality. That why he ask for L lense. He is a begineer, but with his techical professional background, he can pick up fast. Only considration is he don't want to buy something and regret not getting a better one later. Basically, he travel a lot, and like to shhot landscape and city scape. Perhaps a recommendation for a walk about lense and a panoramatic lense. Basically he looking at: 17-40L + 24-105L + 70-200L IS He asked whether to is it worth it to pay a bit more for those lense with f2.8 instead of f4. If anyone can help, will appreciate it. Maybe I ask him to learn his computer and join this forum to ask better. Thanks. |

on a 50D your friend may want to consider the 10-22. the only canon UWA lens available for the 50D.
can pair up with 24-70/24-105 and 70-200, depending on his budget ![]()

17-40 isn't that wide on a crop body. The 10-22 as suggested earlier is a better bet. Pair that with a 17-55/2.8, a 24-70/2.8 or 24-105/4 and he's good to go. Land/Cityscapes won't run away from you, and you don't really need f2.8 to shoot those. If he has that itch to scratch and the cash to scratch it, he can get the 70-200 as well.
Do note the weight of the lenses as well. Carrying around a 24-70 and a 70-200/2.8 is no joke if there is a lot of walking involved. |

So your friend have to consider the weight as well Generally f4 zoom lens is much lighter than f2.8 If landscape and walkabout is his interest, f4 would be sufficient (substitute 17-40 with 10-22, you will get totally a diff perspective of landscape)....... and get the best tripod combo 10-22 + 24-105 + 70-20 4IS Gitzo 1541T + Markins Q3T |

Oh no, he bought the wrong body, why didn't he go fullframe? Alright, never mind.
The reason, why 70-200 f2.8 is not a good idea is it's heavy, too heavy for travel. Any of the above plus a CF Gitzo tripod and a good head, you are ready to go!

BTW can all this lense be use if he go FF? Of course, the crop factor will go to normal, that I will tell him. Thanks a million! |

except for the 10-20mm lense all other lenses recommended will work with full frame EF bodies. but I think instead of buying all the lenses in one shot, he should get a walk around lens, shoot some pictures and then try the wide angles and telephoto side. I am on plane almost 3 days a week, and dont carry anything other than a 24-85mm lens.
