Hi Guys,
want to check with your guys wether you had any experience to buy a canon lens in Edison Electronic in Sim Lim Square because today i go there to check the lens price for Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 for Canon the price around 520 come with the hood and filter, but the thing is i check in other store like cathay, john, most of them are offered about 625, so i wonder is there anything i should consider before i go to edison to buy the lens? are the shop trusted? any comment would be thankful.... |

Anyway, one reason it could be extra cheap, might be that it is a soft copy. That is, that the pictures don't look sharply focused, even if there is no camera shake and the focus is correct. but then, it might be a really good deal. so bite if u know how to check the lens. a brief guide to how to check for sharpness, is to shoot stuff with details (words would be great) at F2.8 (biggest aperture) and zoom in to 100%. use the highest quality settings on the camera to get the most MP. more MP allows u to see more clearly any image quality issues. the center portion should be tack sharp (or at least, almost there). corners will not be so sharp, even if u focus for the corner of the frame. this is normal do manually set the camera sharpening settings to the lowest. otherwise the camera will try to sharpen the images, particularly for jpeg. |

i'm not sure about this, but they might "persuade or otherwise 'con' you" to get other things to get the lens at that price. And that "extra things" would be severely marked up before selling you. Else another tactic they always pull off is say no stock. If they try anything like that, say no, walk away. Take the lift up to 6th floor, Orient Photo. ASk for Stanley, his quotes on lens are always consistent. and no funny pull off deals. Just that you might have to pay in cash to get the best price.

I had an experience with this shop also on their pricing.Went in there and ask for the EF 70-200 f4 non IS lens and they quoted me 1.5k.In my mind i was like WTF?they straightly i say No Thanks and before i make a move to walk out of the shop, the salesman ask me whats my budget? Is it too exp?If exp we have grey set. They think i am a foreigner cause i look like a white guy from somewhere...wanna ripped me off.......luckily i know the market value for that lens.
Orient Photo in level 6 will be my choice to ask for gd pricing and gd service.Sp far they are the best for me in Sim Lim. ![]() |

At Orient Photo you can try the lens. I saw many people trying equipment there to see whether it is a sharp copy. Save your time and possible frustration.

i have not had good experience with Edison.
they have various patterns to try and 'persuade' you to part with your $$$. the tamron lens comes with hood in the box, so they shouldn't even try to 'sell' you a hood and give you a 'special' price. did you make sure that it's brand new? and $520 is the all-inclusive price? INCLUDING GST? a lot of shops try to quote you a low price, then add GST at the checkout. It's not allowed in Singapore IIRC.

That smells fishy. The filter will be some cheap piece of glass which you actually don't need. Go for lens in a reputable shop and save trouble. Read up about filters before you get one, regardless of brand and shop.
