Default Qns: Aperture Mode When Using Speedlite

Hi all,

I was told its not possible to use AV priority when a speedlite is mounted (mine is 580 m1). I seem to agree. The exposure is all wrong.

But does this mean i cant adjust my aperture when my speedlite is mounted?

I dont have the manual to my speedlite. So i am not sure if i can adjust any settings there.

When you are in Av mode, the camera meters without taking the flash into consideration. When the flash fires, your subject is likely to be over-exposed.

Using the flash in Av (or Tv mode, for that matter) is quite effective if you are using the flash as fill light. Just remember to dial down FEC to -1 or -2 (depending on situation - experiment and see). You'll see that the background should be nicely exposed.

If you want control over aperture yet has the flash automatically adjust itself, use manual mode.

When using Av mode, the camera only meters for ambient light. This is esp. impt if you are taking shots in low light condition and you want the background to be exposed correctly with your subject. The flash automatically goes into fill flash mode when in Av mode unless the ambient lighting is darker than EV 10, which in the case you may need to dial down the FEC a little.

when using your flash. it would be best to use Manual mode or even Shutter mode.

I used a 420 with a 10D. 10D has a function that set the shutter speed in AV when a flash is detected. It is set at 1/200. I have been shooting in this mode with flash. The result is rather nice. You just have to play ard with the aperture. I did not compensate the flash just use it as eTTL. Hope this helps.
