Hi. Thanks for the replies. Budget around $200? Downloaded the Sony Vegas premium trial and it is able to play the MTS files but the video is jerky on my curret PC, even though it met the specs. Something to do with my video card?

for HD 1920x1080 format, need at least dual core CPU to play it smoothly, the player need to be able to utilise multi cores CPU also.

I don't think anything can edit AVCHD files smoothly at the moment. Vegas lets you see a jerky preview that is OK for basic cuts editing, but it's not much fun compared with DV editing.
If you need to add a lot of effects and filters, it's probably better to convert the footage to an intermediary codec, such as Cineform, Canopus HQ or Lagarith. Takes up a lot of hard disk but it is a lot smoother during editing. |

You may want to try converting your AVCHD clips into something more editable. There is a software called Voltaic HD which may help. http://www.shedworx.com/?q=voltaichdpc
