Default First DSLR

Hi,

My first posting here, and also got my first DSLR (Canon 450D) yesterday. This forum had gave me great "motivation" to pick up this new hobby. I had been living with my old P&S Camera (IXUS 800 and Casio Exlim) for years, guess it's time to "grow up"..... Thanks to this bro http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showt...ght=lightsabre for "poisoning" me .....

Going to Japan next month, hope to "master" some basics of this new baby before I go.... Any tips are most welcome!

Cheers!

Congratulations on your new 450D; it is a very capable camera. Now go out and shoot, and hopefully you can stave off the BBB virus

Welcome to the canon family.
Tips?? Hmm.. buy more L lenses? hahaha. Just joking.
Not sure what you already know. But to me, understanding the relation between aperture, shutter speed and ISO is the basic. Believe you are no stranger to this forum as well.. hence you should have grabbed a lot of tips already cos this is a great forum to ask, to learn and to share.

Cheers and enjoy shooting.

Thanks all for the warm welcome to the family.

With regards to micy ques, I got mine at Cathay Photo (Peninsula Plaza) at $1,140 (inclusive GST). With 18-55 kit lens, 4GB Toshiba SD, EOS Bag, 1 extra Canon Original Battery and a cleaning kit. Not sure if it is a good deal, actually a shop at 2nd storey, funan quoted me $1,040 (w/o the cleaning kit). But I noticed that this shop is "blacklisted" by many members in this forum, so dare not to buy from them.... I rather spend an extra $100 and play safe.... Anyway, think the cleaning kit given to me by CP oredi cost around $60.... So the diff is about $40...

Yes, I've also been reading up abit on aperture, shutter speed, iso, etc. But so far only basic theory, looking forward to put them to some good practical use the next few weeks.... Maybe will test out my first few "virgin" shots and post them on the C&C section to get some "bashing" first... BTW, I think Canon is giving couple of hours "training" which comes with the purchase of the camera.... Any idea if it is worth to attend this "training" or I should rather spend these few hours to go Orchard Road and snap some shots....

Cheers!

Thanks RedKangoo... Yes, I had been up all night reading the manual... That's the first time I ever read any manuals for electronic products in my whole life! OK, maybe I should sign up for the canon free lesson....

Well done in reading upfront and avoiding questionable shops!
Don't use the Critics Corner in the first place. Post your 'virgin' shots in the Newbies Corner or depending on the subject in one of the other theme threads.
Read a bit about maintenance and storage but focus on shooting and post-processing.

the canon first workshop helped me to firm up my foundations i picked up from CS. You can also use the opportunity to ask the workshop trainer more about the camera! hahaa in fact I bought my 450D in may this year and brought it to japan shortly after! hahaa! Coincidental huh! But i was more concerned with getting pictures of almost everything japan that I didn't really pay attention to skills and all~ =D

1. Read the manual.
2. Go online. Search for the basic terms like Shutter Speed, Aperture, ISO.
3. Find out what they do, how they affect your image.
4. Read up on Composition, be it in books or on the Net.
5. Make sure your basics are darn right.
6. Experiment with what you learnt, keep them in mind.
7. Go Japan, have fun.

Try to ask the prices of their lens, so they will know you did research? Tried and proven effective method. I went AMK Hub de MS colour, but they didn't even bothered to serve me, even though the shop is empty. Bad way for a prospective customer.

@TS, gratz! Now, one more person to spread the BBB virus liao.
