IMHO 17-40 Is not really sharp if I use @ my 40D, 17-55 will be a better lens!
if I got money I'll go for 17-55 ![]() |

Think this is a very frequently asked question, there was a post a while back and it was overwhelmingly in favor of 17-55 (if money is not an issue) and 17-55 I believe has more value for the buck..

Definitely the 17-55 for the next 3 years.
The 17-40 would i think only really shine when on a full-frame, and since its first and foremost a wide angle lens on a full frame camera, the f/4 aperture would not be a problemm. But for the next 3 years, for a cropped camera, definitely the 17-55. |

+1 for the 17-55. Am using it with my 40D as well. Love every bit of it.
The main reason for not getting this lens to me is the FF factor. Since you do not have the intention to go FF for the next 3 yrs, then I think 17-55 will be a good choice. Just my 2 cents. ![]() |

You get faster lens (2.8) You get IS (Very important to me at least) Go for it ... Consider a used one selling in CS which cost about the same as 17-40 .. |

Both are good lens...
But you also did mentioned urself u will not go for FF next 3 year. so meaning in your mind you will be going for FF. In this case my advice will be go for 17-40mm. LENS is a long term investment and will not gone bad or damage if you take good care of it.... 17-40mm able to use for FF & crop body, where by 17-55mm only able use for crop body. If you don't have any intention for FF, no need to think go for 17-55mm Myself, I don't have intention for FF, cos is too ex for me.... so 17-55mm is in my wish list.... hope can get it this X'mas for my present.

Your roadmap is clear so kudos to you. 17-55 will be PERFECT for your 40D. The f/2.8 will be incredibly useful for indoor shots. Not to mention the sterling IQ this lens is famous for and IS! What is important is your requirements now, who knows what will happen in the future!
After 36 months, sell this 17-55. You probably wont lose >$200 and you can treat it as cheap rental for the otherwise priceless shots you got. Last edited by babykailan; 20th November 2008 at 11:00 AM. |

Get 17-55.. when it's time to get FF, sell it. F4 just doesn't cut it. Also can consider getting a prime like 50f1.8 to shoot low light or shallow dof pics of your baby. The pics will look better than what F2.8 can give you.

Coughing Bean,
Get the 17-55, it is f/2.8 (great in low light), IS included. I am using it and it is mounted 80% of the time. It is pricey, but well worth it. The f/4 on the 17-40 is going to be too dark for some indoor (at home) shots.

+1 for the 17-55. With a constant f2.8, IS, and super sharp images, you can't go wrong with the 17-55 on a 1.6x crop body.
