Hi,
I'll be getting the 450D soon, but cant make up my mind which len to pair up? 1. Kit Len 18-55 IS 2. Kit II 18-200 IS 3. Kit Len 18-55 IS + add $459 for EF S55-250IS (Alan photo promo) Used my buddy 450D with Kit len last week and find that the zoom can be better, that caused my undecisive choice now. Can any one offer any view? thanks |

The 55-250mm can be bought for under $400. I'm not sure what you mean by "the zoom can be better" though; are you referring to the added reach provided by a 55-250? The 18-55 is always a good starting point, don't go buying lenses till you know you need them. Budget for accessories, dry cabinet, etc.

i personally would go for
18-200 despite pple saying the 18-55 and 50-250 offers better IQ (better IQ yes, but very very marginally) i would start with the 18-200 and keep it for travel then progress to higher grade lenses. In this way u wont have redundancy. 18-200 for travel and convenience when its impossible to carry > 1 lens and quality lenses for great shots when u can You can then aim for either of these 4 combi for crop cams 1. 17-55 2.8 IS USM with 70-200 F4 IS 2. 17-40 L F 4 with 70-200 F4 IS 3. 10-22 EFS with 24-105 F4 IS 4. 17-50 2.8 tamron with 70-200 F4 IS if budget does not allow, replace the 70-200 with the very capable 50-250 IS u wont go wrong with any of the combis i personally am aiming for combi 1 or 4 with my canon 18-200 |

Get the 18-55mm kit lens. 55-250mm lens and maybe a 50mm f1.8. These are the 3 best lenses to get started.
If you really want a 55-250mm, please don't go pay $459 for it. It retails for about $360+ at other shops. gman Last edited by gman23xx; 19th November 2008 at 12:51 AM. |

dont get flash 11st,
if you want to take indoor, get 50f1.8 1st. so that you can use it for low light and indoor. after using for a while, and if need flash, then get it. I got my flash and 50f1.4 but have not use my flash at all. but have been using 50mm all the time |

With fast lens u can take more ambience light but the subject will still be underexposed if there is not enough light fall on the subject, that is where you need flash..... Dont mislead TS |

You're not that correct here. shops like cathay photo are selling at $435 nett, alan photo selling at $400(grey set) and John 3:16 selling at $440.
i got mine 2 weeks back from John 3:16 at $440 + a diffuser at $30

Get the body and wait for tamron 18-270 VC. It is a good travel lens in my opinion. Or even 18-200.

![]() ![]() I can't believe i'm reading this.![]() Flash is the most important no matter how big your aperture is. A big opening is never a substitute for using a flash. To TS. my suggestion is to get what is cheapest and basic for you. kit of 18-55 is enough already. buy flash if have extra. then play play play for a lot of months. by then, you'll know what to buy.

One must understand the individual strengths and weaknesses of a lens. Evidently, any super zoom will struggle with indoor photography, even with flash.

Are you sure about your statment that the IQ of 18-55 and 55-250 winning only marginally? Dont mislead if you are unsure. My take is that okay sure you can take a 18-200. What if you get another better lens? EG. 17-55 . There will be overlap, then will you want to bring both out when you go shooting? the 17-55 for the quality and the 18-200 for the 55-200 range? Goodluck for the trouble then. Skip the 18-200 start with something better dispite the shorting zoom range. EG. 18-55 IS , 17-50 tammy or 17-55 IS.
Its your call ![]()

i cant believe there are such bigots around,
even in a mature forumwhen i read ur reply, it is as if you are marking our answers im sure that the IQ of 18-55 and 55-250 wins only marginally, thats my perception. This is subjective, im sure u know wat that means. If u want better IQ, might as well make the straight jump to the best lenses canon offers ie, 17-55 and 70-200 what im saying is that i will keep 18-200 and get better lenses when the situation allows. 1 for travel 1 for taking shots when the situation allows for more lenses which part arnt u clear?
its is clear that im bringing the 18-200 for difficult travel places and the other 2 lenses when i can locally or idyllic travel locations. They serve mutually exclusive purposes. I have many friends whom started with 18-55 55-250 then decided to sell both to get better lenses then in the end up with a superzoom when they are tired of changing lenses or pixel peeping. I would say the slight improvement in 18-55 and 55-250 over teh 18-200 does not justify the frequent lens changes. Thats my opinion, i wouldnt dare impose my opinions like some bigots here edited biggot->bigot - thanks for the correction
