Hi all,
I've been using a 400D for about half a year and I am very happy with it. HOwever, i found that the color is not very vibrant. COmpared to my friends D80, hen shooting in VIBRANT MODE, 400D pales in comparison. ![]() Any 400D users can enlighten me on achieving better colors, apart from PP? Thanks and Cheers!! ![]() |

Canon's approach is different from Nikon's. Canon always give neutral colour whereas Nikon's give a punchy colours. However, you should know that digital sensor does not capture 100% colour, it able to capture around 70% to 75% of colours. This can overcome by using editing software such as Photoshop. You can adjust the colours by playing around with the in-camera's saturation, contrast, sharpness, etc... But for me I'm using standard so that I have maximum controls on the colours.

You can play around with the settings in picture styles and bump up saturation...

if you're refering to JPGs straight out from camera, you should try to pick up a cheap second hand Fuji S5 Pro and try the Velvia film simulation.
Otherwise, you just have to tweak the parameters in the camera. You can also try shooting under exposed slightly. Or use L lenses, which generally gives more saturated colours and better constrast...or use a polarizer. |

Because digital sensors respond a lot like slide film; slight underexposure gives rise to greater saturation.

I definitely agree with this too! This colour issue really made me wonder if I should continue investing in canon or change system while it's still early for me.

The end result is completely at your control in post, not left to the mercy of some camera's internal processing chip, which is not entirely bad, but definitely not as advantageous as controlling it on a computer, doing proper post-work, on a screen where you can actually judge contrast and colour better than on a teeny 3" screen. |

By slight underexposure, I'm referring to as slight as 1/3 stop, usually not more than a stop underexposed.

![]() Anyway... I find the 5D has great colors... one of the best around... but the 40D also does not produce that great colors...

Canon's colours are not dull, they are just accurate. Having tried both systems, Canon is still my choice as i can always tweak the colours through PP. Its the superior image quality that matters most to me.
