Besides for the fun of it, this test is done to answer to some newbie questions.

1)Is a fast f2.8 lens really worth the extra price to pay for compare to kit lens ?
2)Which has better optical quality, prime or zoom lens ?

As we can see, most people are able to differentiate the optical quality,
especially when the picture is printed large. So if image quality and fine details are important to you, a f2.8 lens is worth every cent you pay for its optical quality. Of course a faster lens also allow you to shoot under low light condition and with shallow DOF. The built quality usually is better too.
Of course, if you are a student who just started photography and you can only afford a kit lens, do not be disheartened. The kit lens is really not that bad by comparison.

Nowadays zoom lens quality has come a long way and as you can see from the result, it is not that easy to differentiate a good quality zoom lens and a prime. So it is no point debating which is better. Just use the one that does the job for you.

    Hey.. I was spot on...

Well, a F2.8 lens is a good tool to have when shooting in low contrast lighting. But it's NOT exactly a must, esp when you're shooting stopped down.

The difference will come when you're pressed to shoot at a slightly faster shutter speed in low light conditions, this is when you'll be wanting to shoot f2.8 wide open.

    No problem.

Tamron 17-50 lens shoots at f5.6 at 17mm

Nikkor 18-55 kit lens shoots at f5.6 at 18mm
