will my 85 F1.8 hood be usable on a 55-250 IS?

No. They do not attach to your filter thread.

Just in case you have purchased a HOYA rubber hood that attaches to your filter thread then you might get vignetting on the 55-250 in the lower focal ranges. Take your hood and try out in the shops.
