i only use the L308S when i shoot film. for digital, your cam already has a built in meter.

It's just like any other modern meter, comes with both incident and reflected modes. Useful for portraits, less so for landscape as it has no spot meter function.

as waileong mentioned, this model doesn't support sport metering, so it's limited use for landscape who can take advantage of spot metering for accurate reading.
Depending on the camera you use, for eg, if you use manual film camera without built-in metering, i suggest to get one with spot metering capabilities. Hope this helps. |

Again, the built in meter, or lack thereof, has nothing to do with wanting to use an external meter.
Lots of pros used exterbal meters, even if their cameras had meters. Why? Because they can do much more than built-in meters. Eg incident metering, contrast range, flash metering, etc. This was esp critical when shooting slides, as one needs to meter the highlights well, and even 1/2 stop off was losing a bit of colour saturation. Spot metering is useful but not essential for landscapes. One can simply bracket when in doubt, and in some cases, one may even prefer the under- or over- shot. With digital, one may even combine images for hdr, so spot metering is not really needed for that. Bottom line, the 308 is an ideal meter for street and portrait photography as it's so tiny. For landscape it's ok although bracketing may be necessary if you are not in the same light as the subject.
