Default How to create B&W photos but with portions in colour?

I'm quite a newbie to photography so would appreciate any help offered.

I've seen B&W photos which have portions in colour and was wondering how this is done. For example, the photo could be that of a rose plant which is black and white except for the rose which is left red.

I've got Photoshop Elements and would like to achieve the same effect. Can anyone offer any help?

TIA!

Convert the whole image to monochrome then use 'history brush' tool to paint the desired area that you want to colour. It's a quick and easy method.

Thanks

Will the history brush result in the coloured area appear blotchy?

Not really. It'll look natural if you choose the a soft brush setting. Be careful of the edges of the image that you want to colour. Choose a finer brush size when you paint the edges. Zoom in when working with the details. It's easier that way.

If the colour of the rose is nowhere else present in the picture you can also desaturate all other colours. The rose will remain coloured then.
