This thread would serve a a guide for pre-owners of the 10D.
Would current owners of the 10D list down their biggest eyesore problems with the magical 10D so that pre-owners would know what to look out for particularly before a purchase. It would be better to ask for a newer set before purchase rather than sending it in for service isn't it? Would gradly appreciate your time and effort. Warmest regards, Dan |

It's a good camera. If there's one serious weakness, i'd say it's the focussing. i've shot with an EOS 50, 3 and 10D. 10D's AF is definitely the worst of the three. (And it's supposed to be a vast improvement over the D30/D60...)
On the 10D, the focus confirmation lock comes on, but experience has shown that one must still visually check the focus. Sometimes it's really on the background, sometimes it's not quite on but camera says it's on, etc. (i'm not even talking about back-focus here.) Make me wonder, really, why Canon can make generations of film SLRs focussing perfectly fine and goof up the AF on a $2.7k camera where the sensing media doesn't even move (ie no film advance). You won't catch this 'bug' in the shop though, bcoz i) it only happens some of the time, usually indoors, say 20% (rough guess)? and ii) your new 10D in the store doesn't have a charged battery. Hopefully the 300D's AF will be improved from all the 'experience' Canon gleaned from the D30/D60/10D issues. It's still a good camera, though, the 10D. |

Shouldn't be any problem on new stock.
As I told you earlier, I had sent my set in for calibration but it is actually the LENS problem rather than the Body. Biggest problem is $$$$$$ ![]() BUY BUY BUY lah. |

As what ST 100 has stated so far, I would agree that there is a focusing problem with the 10D. However, for 10D owners who have problems with their cams, I did the following and have received improved results. However, I have not tested it for night shots yet.
I sent my cam in for caliberation at the Canon Service Centre. I told the guys there to move the focal plane forward. After caliberation, I tested it out on NDP 2003, one wedding shoot and the SFW. I would have to say that I have experienced improved results that I am happier with. Canon would do this for free for the first time (if the cam is still under warranty) and after that I think that there is a fee involved for subsequent caliberations. |

agape01, is it true the calibration has to be for both the lens AND the 10D together?...

NO problem at all for me (but I am a newbie). Maybe the only problem you will get is the tendency to upgrade your lens, which are VERY expensive!!!
No regret at all. |

I also had a newbie friend who bought 10D, he took a lots of pictures and print them and feels great about it. But when he showed it to us, it was soft and had obvious back focus problem. What I am saying is only the pros and season users can tell the difference between a sharp and focus picture. Just like I have seen many others who took pictures of their kids and feels great even when focus is on the background (eg furniture or windows).

but the most important thing for non-pros is that they are happy with their pic-taking. and that's what hobby is all about. so as a friend you should give him some tips to improve his quality. my 2 cts worth.... :-) |
