Default Sony Pricing Control - Precautions to take

Dear Fellow CSers,

Please be cautioned that ANY special prices that you receive from your Sony retailers should not be posted publicly. Sony's Pricing Control will give problems to them if they find out about it.

I have personally made this mistake before, but will never repeat it again.

Let's all be very careful...Please note that there are folks (not referring to anyone in particular) around who troll these forums with not-so-good intents.

Thanks.

(Moderators please do as you deem fit with this post).

All such e-quotes specifically state that it's confidential and you should not post or share it... why then would you still violate that trust?

Thanks, Rashkae.

This not only refers to e-quotes, but all special deals that you get that are not already publicly available.

Personally, I've received good prices and was "allowed" by the retailer to share the pricing with friends, but it's not advisable to post it in public, just to protect all parties involved.

Yup...

And this doesn't just apply to Sony. I've gotten some very good prices on other manufacturer's items too via the same channels.

Which they shouldn't be doing either, but CS gets 10x the traffic.

One thing I miss in this Sony forum is a comprehensive, up-to-date list of Sony DSLR prices. In the Canon forum there are posting of all the latest prices of pretty well everything for Canon.

In the near future I expect to buy either a Sony A900 or a Canon 5D MkII. One of the key factors in my decision making is being aware of the latest prices of equipment from the various sources. It would be very useful for all of us if someone started a "Sticky" on the latest camera prices like they have in the Canon forum.

Cheers,

Pete

sadly, that's the crux of this thread:
retail shops are not supposed to sell below Sony's Recommended Retail Price.
and sony is clamping hard on the shops that do sell below RRP.

So to look for the price of sony stuffs: very easy:
RRP for sony equipments is comprehensively available in Sony Style Singapore website..

for sony in this, coz i think it's natural for customers to desire to look for and to go for the best deal

The main thing is, we could post the "street" price, but not the shop name that quoted that price. Which is why many of us use e-quote or go visit our neighborhood shop for a friendly chit-chat, tea and discounts.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for comments. The sort of information I would love to see is similar to what they have in the Canon Forum,
http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=184322

Because I only spend a few weeks each year in Singapore it's not easy for me to pop into lots of the shops or to establish a personal rapport with dealers. Not only that some shops treat me like a dumb tourist and ask silly prices :-(

Cheers,

Pete

Pete, just let us know when you'll be here. Also, Cathay Photo's e-quotes would be the same no matter where you're from. Otherwise, we can take you to MS Color. No need to run around, no "caucasian inflation".

Playing cat and mouse game is tiring after some time :-)

Sony offers tourist international warranty these days from many countries. Need to check which one has a better pricing if you're happen to be traveling to some countries.
Supporting local shops are always recommended and a good thing to do, but at a significant price? I'll still buy if I can't get it anywhere else

Everyone knows about buying oversea.......but how abt this FAQs from Singapore Custom

Q2 I am an Indonesian. My brother who is residing in US will be sending me a new laptop valued at US$2500 to my sister in Singapore by international courier service. I intend to bring my laptop back to Indonesia on my coming vacation in Singapore. Do I need to pay GST when the laptop arrived into Singapore? If GST is payable, can I claim the refund for GST at the airport when I depart from Singapore with my laptop?

A The laptop is subjected to 7% of Goods and Services Tax (GST). The GST paid is not refundable when you leave Singapore as GST refund for tourists is only applicable to goods purchased in Singapore from retail shops participating under the Tourist Refund Scheme

How abt this????
GST relief is granted on goods, inclusive of new articles, personal effects, souvenirs, gifts and food preparations but excluding dutiable products, imported by post to a total value not exceeding $400. Where the value exceeds $400, the entire sum would be subject to GST.

Failure to declare or making an incorrect declaration of non-dutiable goods
Fine 10 times the GST amount subject to a minimum of $50

you can pay sony rrp in whatever ways. for shop discount, they only accept cash. price is very much fixed. shop A and shop B fight on $10 - $20 margin and a $20 cheaper deal may not seem as good a deal if petrol, erp and parking is considered.

It's not good to post prices and the shops offering these prices cos SONY will take punitive action against these shops... so if you value good prices, then please do be cautious...

Having said that, please also note that some of us here are regular purchasers of equipment from some shops, and therefore get preferential pricing... so don't expect that if you're just buying one item, you can get a very good discount like some of us here...

Also, it's easier to get a discount if you purchase things as a set or combo from one shop... it's tempting to scout for the cheapest lens, flash, body, CF card, charger, batteries, from all over the country, but that also means that for each place you shop at, it's harder to give a better discount cos the margins are already quite thin... grouping your purchases at one shop allows the owner to give you a better discount since he earns on a few products he sells you...

Bottomline is: Don't be a cheapskate. Photography is an expensive hobby, so bite the bullet and pay the going rate.
