Default Light & Shadows study

My study of light & shadows. I used black & white as it's an easier approach to the experiment... next time when more skillful then use colour approach.

Compliments welcome only

...naahhh.... just kidding... just whack lah...
i was a tad disappointed with the slightly soft focus during night shoots. haven't been able to get good night shots for my 730UZ... think I pak-jiao. Just not skillful enough sial...

hey the second shot is great!!

as to ur problem of soft pictures at nite only, are u using a tripod? maybe it could be camera shake. dun think it's autofocus problem since the contrast is high (shadows, bright lights).

if u using tripod, try using self-timer so ur finger don't move the camera when it's pressed.

and.. wat has pak jiao gotta do with soft photos... unless u using manual focus?

1> what made the 2nd shot better than the first?
2> what can be improved for the 1st shot?

thanks. and thanks for your encouragement... these were taken within the first week i got my C730UZ back in may 2003

1. composition
2. composition.

1 seriously looks pretty.. boring if you ask me.
shot 2 is much more interesting coz of the way the shadows get thrown around.

jeffrey:
1st pic, f2.8, 1/5s, ISO400, 19mm.
2nd pic. f3.5, 1/250s, ISO400, 66mm

sequiter:
hmm... i tot that the light & shadow play in pic1 would have been more interesting cos the picture deludes the viewer into guessing beyond the space of the canvas... as in"is there more to this structure than what is seen?"
as for rule of thirds, perhaps i could have lowered the juntion of the bright left pole and the oblique roof. then it would have fallen closer to the bottom left intersection of the grids.

but i know what you mean.. if it ain't pretty, it just ain't pretty.. got no x-factor.. just that i had to take a lot of pains to get this shot the way it looked... so maybe i more biased towards this shot

but thanks alot for your insightful comments. it has made me understand more about how to make my fotos more cutting-edge. thanks bro.

it didn't give me a feeling of trying to look beyond what was above the roof..

i think a tighter crop might work i.e. take out the protruding pole on the left, and the bottom crop away some of the ground, leaving only the strcuture (which is of course the esplanade open stage).

that would produce a more "light and shadow" kinda effect. however of course you lose the feeling of trying to look beyond.

basically personally, i didn't try to guess what's beyond the space. i just saw a whole big black area that has nothing in it. no lights, no nothing, just black.

and you don't always have to obey the rules of third.. i think in this case maybe a more creative shot would prove better than sticking to the rules..

just my 2cents.

overall it's a good try, and i look forward to seeing your light and shadows experiments in colour.
