    Outperforming is subjective.
I'll say that build quality is better, it gives a more solid feel, AF speed, burst rate would be faster if it matters, faster operations in terms of adjusting settings and so on. After all it is designed for a more professional group of photographers as compared to the 450D. Prism should be better if I remember correctly [higher coverage and magnification]. If I were to comment on image quality, i'm sure i'll open a can of worms...so I won't.

Let's just say that the 30D is a very capable camera at a very reasonable price right now. Do expect it to have higher demand for it and less depreciation as compared the to 450D should you decide to resell. (: The $200 difference can be spent on a good lens, which usually matters more than the body.

Umm, regarding the MP issue, correct me if I'm wrong, I think 2MP is sufficient for 8R prints. Of course you can crop and edit more with more MP, but the idea is if you have less room for error, you'll start making less errors, which is the whole point of learning photography. 8.2MP is more than sufficient for most uses and it'll save your computer some memory space as well.

You might want to do a comparison between the 2 cameras yourself. Check out www.dpreview.com for camera specifications.

2MP is pushing it quite a fair bit for 8R. Ideally, for prints, you'd want to check your resolution with something like the following:

    4R: 4"x6"
    Resolution: 300 pixels per inch

    6" x 300 = 1800px on the long edge.

    30D/40D/50D are mid range DSLRs
    400D/450D are low end DSLRs
    1000D is newbie DSLR

Have you considered a Pentax? K20D/K200D? or 2nd hand K10D/K100DSuper?

I'm swaying towards the 450D actually...

I used to have a 30d for a year and subsequently got a 450d for my wife. Felt that picture quality is better with 450d (probably due to the 12meg vs 8meg) but 30d is more usable for me due to larger grip and 2nd display screen on the top. Using the back LCD as a info screen on 450d while shooting actually drain the battery much faster.

Recommend you to get a 450D if it suit your hand, else a 2nd hand 30d at $700+ is hard to beat. Go to canon gallery at vivo to try the 450d and 50d, 50d and 30d grip are very similar.

Hmm, meaning that 2mp is good for 4R only? I'm sorry I forgot the pixel counts thing after I returned to film, I only remember that film is good enough for almost any size, b/w film at least. I quoted the 2mp for 8R from a forum thread last time.
It was just to illustrate a point that 12mp vs 8mp is quite redundant. heh

Though I have experience with both cameras, I've got a question about the two cameras actually. Which one performs better for higher ISO? I did day events with both cameras, so I haven't pushed the limits of their ISO capability. I'm looking to buy a 30D when I gathered enough cash, my cash is tied with my mamiya right now...

Thanks... and sorry for hijacking I think you might be interested to know the answer too though, Ohmytofu.

    No problem at all Martin....

Any inputs are welcome...I would like to get it right the first time and get a camera that will last me at least 2 years or more...

    I have not seriously,

Maybe now i will...my concern actually is to stick to 1 brand so when its time to upgrade the body, i'll still be able to make use of my investment on the lenses.

That's what all SLR users do. Very rarely do people have more than one system (unless photography puts bacon on your table).

After reading up on the Pentax,

I have to say i'm very impressed by the specs of the K20D!

Even the K10D has very bang for bucks specs...and the pricing of the lenses, whether new or used are very reasonably priced compared to Canon and Nikkor...

I would seriously consider the K10D/K20D now.
