Hi,
What lens do you have in hand now? If you need a general portrait lens, the 17-70 range will be perfect, 10-20 is a UW that may not be the best in shooting portrait but could give you a new view of angles, especially in landscape. I myself is not an ultra-wide user, thus no experience to offer in regards to the lens. As for the 17-70 is close to my sigma 28-70 f2.8 that is 98% of the time on my camera, I found the range to be perfect in taking portrait, be it half body, shoulder shots or just head shots, it's the perfect range for me. Besides, the 17-70 with f2.8-4.5 will arguably be better than the standard kit lenses with f3.5-5.6, giving you brighter pictures and less camera shake as it offers at least 2/3 stops better.
