    Default Need Help Badly

My cam all of the sudden cannot auto-focus. I have no idea why. I sounds like kena jam or something. Is it someting wrong with the lens or the cam? is there anything I can do. it seems like my lens can only focus one way as in it can only turn inwards to focus.

A little bit more information would help. What camera, what lens?

Generic advice include : did you change any custom settings? Did you check the switch on the lens to make sure it is on AF? Did you dismount / remount the lens? Reboot the camera by removing battery? Clean the contacts?

Its a 20D with a 18-55 IS lens. It seems like it can only focus backwards where the focusing thing spins anti-clockwise when you hold the camera. I did all of thge above and I din change and custom settings

I'm a nikon user so this might be useless to you... but in nikon sometimes I find my camera cannot focus because I accidentally press the direction keys and set the focusing target on the right or top, instead of center.. maybe I'm just 2pid.. but just in case you find it uselful.. just wanna be helpful.

Hmm.. did you test with another lens?

    Also try:

    1. Center AF point only

    2. Choose a good AF target

    3. Clean the AF sensor (in sensor clean mode, looking into the camera, that's the rectangular holes at the bottom, below the mirror). Use a bulb air blower (not canned air!)

I have that same camera myself. Cleaning contacts and cleaning the AF sensor helped me in the past. And don't forget to check to make sure the lens is clean too (both front and rear element).

To add... I recently tried the 50D at a shop but the shutter refuse to work... :

    1. Take out the battery and reload.. and switch it on again... have heard a few incidents where problems lies n the batteries contact... (it a simple and easy step to try anyway... at no cost).

Have not use this lens before so not sure what's wrong, maybe you can check if the AF/MF switch is in the proper position and whether the focus limit switch is engaged if it has one.

Why don't you just send it in to the Canon Service Centre? At least you can be assured that they won't con you. The repair may require parts replacement and third party repair shops might not have access to such specialised parts. What's more, it's their product and if they can't repair it, nobody else can.
