Default D90 file sequencing problem

Hi D90 users,

I'm having problem setting my file sequence to continuous, it keeps going back to DSC_0001 after I re-format my SD card. Please advise. Thanks.

Read the manual.

Look under Custom settings : File Number Sequence.

Off is default.

You have to set it to On.

In fact it's already set it to 'OFF', but it starts from DSC_0001 everytime I took out the SD to upload my pics to my laptop & then reformat it. I just want to know if you guys have the same problem.

That's why zac08 said to switch the setting to ON.

If your SD card is automatically reformatted when you insert and remove it, there's a high possibility that's there are problem with the D90 and it's best to bring it down to NSC for a check up.

This is what he said...

Quote:
d7 File number sequence top
This ensures your file numbers keep counting up.
Nikon goofed, and left it OFF by default. Left this way, you'll start from DSC_0001 every time you reformat a card. Over time you'll have hundreds of photos on your computer all called DSC_0001. It will drive you crazy and it will be too late to do anything about it.
Please reset this to ON for sanity's sake.
If you ever do want to reset to DSC_0001, use the Reset option.

Edit: mine remains as ON even after formatting a few cards. I took a few shot using the formatted cards and the number sequence continues. I am not experiencing what KRW mentioned.

What does it means by " It will drive you crazy and it will be too late to do anything about it. "

I have this problem now that the file number is not following the shutter count, can any kind person teach me how to force the camera or force start the count from my last filename according to the shutter count?

Thank you in advance.

When you upload your pictures to your computer, all folders will have repeated numbers.

Believe you me...file naming is the last thing on my mind when i'm out shooting. Proper data and file management kicks in once you've uploaded the images to your computer if you do not want it to over-ride your existing image so happened it's having the same file name and extension.

To TS...my cycling buddy's D90 not having the problem.
Like others has said...get it checked.

Yes, I know data management is the last thing we are to get too involved.

ie. My shutter count is now 500, but the last upload file is named as DSC_0174.jpg
Anyone know how to make the D90 to start counting from 501, or with name as DSC_0501.jpg as the next shooting name?

Or this is something that only the NSC can do?

Thanks

what is the point must continue at 501? do you know after 9999 it will restart at 0001 again, is this the way you want to keep track of your shutter counts? are you going to make a mark on your camera body for every 10k, so you can remember your camera go thru how many cycles??

hmmm... i never experienced this prob maybe because i always use the d90 body to format the card...

also, if you use the in camera re-touch menu and do the raw file edit thing... after you save one photo editing, it would give you a new number start with CSC and the last used number plus 1... if you die die must get back to dsc_501 then use the raw file edit thingy till you reach the number lor...

I doubt that you'll be able to do this in the camera itself but if you die die wan to continuous name it the only way is to batch rename it with a software on the computer

Switch the file sequence to ON and everytime i format the SD card, the file number always running from previous number.
In ur case, have u try to format the card in ur camera? And does the number start from 1? or continue from previous?

I think there is a way to make it 501. Try it.
1) snap a photo on ur camera
2) view the photo on ur pc
3) rename the photo to DCS_0500
4) insert the card back to camera
5) snap and see whether the image count as DSC_0501

The camera will choose the highest number in the card and make +1.
Try it. hehe Hope it works and make u feel happy.
