Regard,

Why are you considering such a old flash? The newer functions won't be supported.

Since you have already invested in a good camera, GO for a better flash like a SB-800

It can work but not fully compatible with your camera.

As zac08 suggested, get the newer flash like SB 400/600/800/900.
Best to get at least a SB 800 or SB 900. Why only these 2???
Try to do a search on SB800 vs SB600 as there have been lots of debates over the last few years.

Hey! why not. its free. He He He
iTTL & TTL won't work, that means you need to set to M for the SB25. Thats what i do with my SB26. i use it as a slave unit.

just get a cheaper SB600 for a start. You may add SB900 later on.

Decision is yours. i meant buying a new flash gun.
(get hold of the sb25 1st)...

I believe that the TTL functions found commonly in modern flash units will not be available on your SB-25. You may be forced to rely on manual settings.

A mode and M mode on flash only, if you can live with that.

It stands for Through-The-Lens.

Saves you the hassle of setting values on the Flash. For analogy, it's just like why cameras have an all-Auto function, but you still can set exposure compensation.

not sure your D300... But for your sake, i took my old Sb25 on my D90 .. it works fine, just need to do everything manually. I suppose D300 and D90 are much similar.. So should be ok.

If i only use external flash occassionally, like casual indoor shots and occassional fashion show shots at shopping malls, would the SB400 be sufficient??

I'd say that the SB-400 is very much like a pop-up flash that can be flipped upwards such that you are able to bounce the flash. Useful for close range stuff, say casual indoor shoots. Fashion show shoots at shopping malls... Unlikely to be very useful.

I own a D300 too and it work great with my SB 24. I always do the following setting as below:

Set your SB 25 to A

Now you have to manually adjust your aperture with the following simple rules as below

If your camera aperture is set at f5.6:
Direct flash use f4 to reduce harsh shadow.
Direct flash use f5.6 if your subject is more than 3 meters away or backlighting.

Bounce flash use f8. Good for HDB ceiling height
Bounce flash using white card use f5.6 to reduce harsh shadow, or f8 for distance away.

Its a f4, f5.6 and f8 combination and is a simple plus one-stop or minus one stop with just one click to do the setting. Most importantly, you must remember to set it whenever you shoot your subject.
