Default which way would you go?

Hi everyone,

I am currently using the D300 and I have the Nikon 18-70mm lens.

Situation is like this….I’ve been shooting more recently and realized that that I want to have more coverage in terms of both wide angle and extra distance. (my shooting object varies…but mostly taking pictures of people)

These are the two options that I can choose and I hope you all can help me out.

1) get the tokina 11-16mm and keep the 18-70mm
2) sell off the 18-70mm and get the 18-200mm VR

which way would you go?

You might also seriously consider the Nikon 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 VR. Compared to the 18-70mm, it gives you a little more coverage on either end.

The 18-200mm is a great travel and walkabout lens but due to its 11x zoom, the optics can to some people be less than desirable. But that does not mean that it is a sucky lens.

By getting the 11-16mm, you are gaining mainly on the wider end. So if you feel that 18mm is not wide enough, then it should be a lens that you should seriously consider.

How much is Tokina 11-16?

If I were you I would keep 18-70 then buy 70-300 vr ( cost you around 700 sgd )
18-70 is a sharp lens, and I feel 18-200 is not as sharp as 18-70 and 70-300, so better dont sell it.

1) tokina 11-16mm and 18-70mm - gvies you wide but does not give you extra distance

2) 18-200mm VR - does not give you the extra wide ....

so if based on your requirement, assuming you would not consider other lens, then your option might be to buy a Tokina 11-16 mm and a Nikon 18-200mm, sell your 18-70mm.

i like the 11-16 very much..only problem is that i am afraid that i won't find much chance to use it. it is only the recently that i find myself getting caught out having not wide enough angle. on most situation....18mm is wide enough....just enough.

this is also my dilemma....i like my 18-70 very much. used it for 4 years already and i llike it very much. similar to the 11-16 situation...i find myself wanting longer reach! But i don't think i will shoot above 200 often (if i go beyond 200....i think i might have to run after my children instead )

I know the 11-16 is sharp....just don't know if the 18-200 is as sharp as the 18-70.

the tokina is selling at about 900.
the 18-200 is selling about 1000.

i have been sitting on the fence for about 3 months between these 2 lenses.

buy 11-16...have 2 lenses. happy
sell 18-70 and replace with 18-200...still with one lens. also happy.

what would u choose?

i knew this would happen....

i actually put this option as no.3....but i removed it because i TRY not to go near that option. that situation will only materialise if something happen on the evenings of Wed, Sat and Sun.

in that case let me share with you my personal experience. I used to have a 18-200mm, I have been happy with it becuase it was light, sharp enough and convenient. Not untill I switch to 17-55mm and I got stuck with it. I have since sold my 18-200m because I realised I have never used it again. Again I have to iterate I am not saying it is no good but 17-55mm really has its advantage over the 18-200mm in many aspects.

After selling the 18-200mm away for a while, I bought a 80-200mm to meet my tele desire. This is another good lens but I hardly use it. Subsequently I bought a Tamron 11-18mm WA becuase at times I felt I miss the wide end like you, end up using it occasionally only.

So you have to decide, how much in % of your shooting pattern is at the wide end and at the tele end, then you decide where you want to spend your money on. Now I am thinking very hard if I should switch from 80-200mm to 70-200mmVR.....

For me I used to start off with the 18-135mm. Later I got an 18-200 and a Nikon 12-24mm for travelling purposes.

You hardly use the 80-200mm why would you think so hard over switching to the 70-200mm ?

just an update

i saved up.....and i bought the 17-55 2.8 instead.

its really a heavy lens but the quality is simply top notch (in terms of build and picture quality).

my 18-70 is in the cabinet now but i cannot sell it cos my wife said - i bought it for you...you better DON'T sell it - so LL can only watch it take up space.

will be buying the tokina 11-16 probably in about 2-3 mths time to cover that UWA gap. Does anyone know what is the latest pricing for this lens? Last i checked at AP (i think November), they quoted me $875 (shd be that price)

thanks all!

Ha ha you neither gone wider (17mm vs 18mm) nor longer, in fact shorter (55mm vs 70mm)...

Strange...

heehee.....strange decision right?

sat down...thought over it....relooked my pictures and realized having the big zoom is a want rather than a need so i skipped the 18-200 and decided to go for the 17-55 instead.

thankfully it was a right decision (to me).

is sharpness everything? got other factors too like bokeh I would get a 80-200 AF-D instead. i am a no vote for AF-S lenses. its just me.
