Default Shutter Speed & external flash

Is there any way to get a shatter speed of faster than 1/250s with external flash attached and firing?

I keep getting 1/250s in manual mode, even though I've set to faster speed to freeze things.

I'm using 40D with 430EX. Pls give me a lesson. Thanks.

If you using external flash, the shutter speed is limited to 1/125 or 1/250 depend on your DSLR.

The only thing you need to set is thru TTL at your flash and aperture priority and shoot at nite mode.

There is the GN number for the power output of your flash and the inverse proportional to the distance away from your subject....

by setting the "H" on flash (there's one button for that "H" on flash), i think u can get faster synchronization speed (higher than 1/250S which's the highest syn speed if not set to "H")

1/200 or 1/250-- not 1/125.

i don't know how u will use hi-speed sync flash but it may not help freezing motion when used as a main lighting.
it is mostly for fill flash when shooting outdoor on sunny day and using wide aperture to decrease DOF.
hi speed sync also reduces the usable distance of your flash(especially weaker 430EX, like mine, comparing to 580EX for instance).

i found this website explains Canon flash photography very well.

Why'd you need a custom function? Just use M or Tv mode and choose 1/250? If you're stuck at 1/200, it means thats your flash sync speed.

the xxxD series syn max at 1/200, xxD series 1/250. I know there's a high syn function but I've never used it

Huh? This has nothing much to do with what the TS is asking...

---

You will want to look for a button that has a "H" and a flash logo next to the "H". Press it so that the same "H and flash logo" appears on your flash's LCD display. The flash will be able to fire at speeds faster than 1/250s, but at reduced power.

Hi bro, just tried out and it totally works. The "H" sign appears beside my flash icon inside view finder whenever I set the shatter speed faster than 1/250.

Thanks everybody.
