Hi all:
I will be getting a 400D (second hand) to start off with my photography interest. However, i heard that the Kit lens does not produce good image and was recommended to get better lens. Therefore, can any kind sould recommend me what lens should i get? Hmm...budget from $200 - $250. I hope to look for a lens which is a overall performer as i do not know what is my area of interest yet. Hope to get some good recommendations |

With that budget, you'd have to go for the kit lens. Good zoom lenses start S$500 and above.
Go for the IS version of the kit lens, it's still better than the 400D kit lens.

Yes, it's a better lens.

After all, you wouldn't be able to tell what's a good image and what's not. Most people cannot tell apart a picture taken with a kit lens from a L lens either. If you can't, I doubt you can make use of the "better" lens, or appreciate it. Think about getting other lenses when you have budgets of $600 and above ba. |

If you need longer focal length, the EF-S 55-250mm IS is a decent lens. Around $350 brand new, might be available cheaper. I advise avoiding the EF 75-300mm. Get more experience first. I'll help you figure out what you need. |

Welcome to C-camp. I just got 450d and kit lens too. Have the 50mm f1.8 too.
Advise you to stick to kit lens with IS to learn. if u really want to save, spent 40-60 bucks for kit lens without IS to practise. When u ready, then go forward for f2.8 lens. |

kit len has a good range to start......IS version add more practically to your learning......
good zoom lens if you have a little more budget you might want to look for tamron 17-50mm f2.8. this unit has similar range with the kit len but once you have it you won't regret for its performance if you have double the above budget you can go for 17-55 f2.8 IS USM, this unit will conquer alot of other even the L lens.

Get the kit and start shooting. See what is your shooting style before deciding on your next lens. At least for me...i have sticked with the kit lens for 3 months and i realise that i need a faster lens (have changed to a tamron f2.8 just recently and retired my kit lens). *OT abit: PM me if u need to look for a kit lens with IS..i'm selling it with CPL + UV filter. |

as mentioned, good zooms start from $500, and if you're looking for "faster and further", you probably want to look at the 70-200s starting from about 800 2ndhand right up to 2500 brandnew

There is no way that you're going further and faster with that small budget. A (relatively bad image quality) Sigma 70-300 is around S$300+, but it has bad IQ, slow focus and small aperture.
If you're going further and faster, you'd need to fork out money ie 70-200 f/2.8 from Canon/Sigma/Tamron. If you're going further alone, you have to fork out less money ie Sigma 70-300, Canon 55-250IS etc. If you're going faster, the cheapest one would be the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 @ S$550+. It's kind of like saying "I want to drive a new BMW" when you're staring at your first S$3k paycheck.
